    Hi,

    Hope someone might be able to help.

    I was one of the lucky ones (or unlucky as it seems now) to purchase the series X when they were first released back in September 2020, I didn't actually get it delivered until November 2020. We kept it wrapped because it was for my boys birthday on April 2021 but we were moving homes, decorating and so didn't want to get it all dusty, therefore we said we'd gift it to him this year. So this month we celebrated his Birthday, and finally gifted it to him.

    Next morning we proceeded to hook it up to our new 75" 4k TV we got just for this. Turning it on went through the first time setup. Tried to use the xbox app on the mobile to complete setup but it wouldn't pair, so just used the controller instead. It told us we had an update which we started and then it came back with the following error...

    0x80072f8f 0x00000000 0x00000201

    I tried the holding power button for 10 seconds, then powering up again.

    Pulled power and network cable out, waited 3 mins and then did the eject+pair then hit power and release. wait for two chimes (although I only get one) to reset the console.

    Also tried the latest OSU1 update from the MS update site which update perfectly and then fail in the same way as above on the first time setup. Also want to mention I'm not on the insider program. So these are the regular updates.

    I tried on Sky Broadband LAN in the UK speeds of 38Mbps which gave the same error.

    Also tried using my Sky Mobile 5G tethered to my phone with WiFi sharing disabled

    Tethering on EE Mobile 5G gave me a different error code...

    0x87dd0003 0x00000000 0x00000201

    After trying Trying the tethered connection and switching to a LAN connection it would then show the following message...

    Your Network is good, but there are some xbox service issues.

    So I can't browse the menu above because it hasn't created the Home Screen at this point, still stuck on first time setup. Therefore checked online and all services seem fine.

    I have seen many people with the same issue online around the same time I had purchased it only they started using it then and they were simply forced to swap, Microsoft could not provide a fix or explain what the actual issue was.

    I spoke with Microsoft Support with a nice chap called Alex. We went through the same troubleshooting He told me what I already knew. I was 5 months over on my warranty, he tried to escalate to the other teams to try and get me a replacement but it was declined twice. I understand that I am out of warranty but asked that if the console was saving any logs they would see it was only just turned on now because it was meant to be gifted. However you would expect that it was tested before shipping and if an update they provided broke it, shouldn't they provide me with a fix rather than bill me for another £250 for what is a brand new console which I paid £500. So very disappointed in the customer service element.

    If anyone knows how to fix this or able to help with a replacement I would be grateful.

    Did you get this fixed? Literally, the exact same thing has happened to me. Same purchase date and deliver period. Just tried to set up last week and get the same errors as you do. Same response with regards to having to pay for a repair despite it never having even been connected to their network.

    What's crazy about Microsoft's response to this is that it's not an uncommon or unknown issue. Their support even tweeted about it in December 2019. A quick Google search shows it's a common issue.

    If they insist it can't be fixed without me paying for a repair, I'm just going to sell the unit and accessories to recoup as much as I can. I can tell you now, I'll never buy another XBox product again.

    It's also interesting as it can connect just fine on Ethernet. I can see the activity light flickering away showing it's connected at the switch when it's trying to check for updates. Just takes 5 minutes before it gives up and comes up with the error. People got exactly the same error on XBOX ONE back in 2019! That turned out to be an issue with XBOX LIVE! I have even done manual offline firmware update and still the classic Microsoft "Checking for updates..." but can't actually use the console.

    Currently that's not an issue on Xbox live, and happens often due to network issues, but if thats not the case, and even doing the offline update process keeps happening, there's a problem in the console
