Xbox Series X External Harddrive Usage and the Auto upgrade system

So I was lucky enough to bag a series x here in the uk last weekend, and as my 5tb harddrive is almost full of all my xbox one and back-compat games, i got another 5tb hardrive to at least sort me out for the next couple of years worth of games storage, (as game sizes will only get bigger and no one likes redownloading games all the time). Now im aware of the fact that the internal SSD will offer fasterload times, as thats the hardware limitation of a HDD, but as the xbox one x shown, the hardware of the console itself will still give faster load times regardless of if it still runs on a HDD. So i had planned on leaving the internal free for lateron in the generation when loadtimes may start to drag on abit. My first game i replayed was Dishonored death of the outsider, which looked great with the auto HDR and the game did have improved load times from what i could gather ( as all load time comparisons before launch on youtube, always compared using the internal SSD, which was an unfair test in my opinion. no one done a test with an external it seemed).

But anyway, when i had downloaded the Upgrades for some of the games on the series X, i realised that the save location was on the internal, instead of the set secondary HDD. This baffled me and looking online it turned out that all next gen games cant run on a HDD. Like What the hell! Why is that a thing. Furthermore games that have been given the upgrade, has to be the version you play on the series X. So even though i have Hitman 3 for instance, already on my HDD that played in 4k on my xbox one X wont play on my series X, as i have to have the upgraded version on the internal. meaning that before i even have any true new games, ive got a console that only has 500GB of free storage! Furthermore the internal 1TB SSD (which is nowhere near enough) is over double the price of a 1tb harddrive for your computer.

So i now find myself not wanting the developers releasing Upgraded versions of their games as its just taking away little space thats already practically non existent on the storage. Why the hell cant i just choose to play the last gen versions on the xbox, they are already on my HDD anyway, and with the one x already being in 4k im not really gaining much anyway apart from framerate. But as a mostly single player gamer, competitive framerate is lost on me. As long as the game is a stable framerate ill pick visual fidelity every time. And as currently the only game coming out is the mass effect trilogy, which is still on 4K on the xbox one X anyway, im wondering why ive brought a Series X at all yet. Should have just waited a year or so and got it abit cheaper..

Im proper annoyed, like why is it like this! Surly im not the only one mad about this, but then again most players havnt been able to get one yet, but when they do i think people would find these problems quite annoying!

Microsoft havnt been this dirty since the time when they sold and additional wireless adapter for the xbox 360.

    :)

Pre download Xbox Series X games

    Not really...

Xbox Series X games / upgrades / updates has to be installed onto the Series X internal or expansion card SSD,

You can have Xbox One games on your external hard drive that will get an Series X upgrade but the games will need to be transferred to the Series X and then the Series X upgrade will need to be downloaded onto the Series X SSD,

    As an example...

I have Marvel Avengers on my external hard drive that will get the Series X upgrade and I will transfer the game over to the Series X SSD ready to download and update the game to the Series X version when available.

Yeah I understand this, but like I said before...all the games are in the external, but for whatever reason is upgrading and updating to the internal.
This behaviour only occurs on Series X|S optimised games and only on the series X|S console.

Basically, if you have an Series X and your Xbox One game has been optimised for the system it will be moved to the faster storage during the update.

Is there a way to save DVR clips to external hard drive?

If you have an external hardrive pluged in to your xbox one the system will then take the xbox ones main harddrive and use it for a backup for when your external harddrive becomes full. As far as takeing games and apps from the xbox one harddrive to an external
yes that can be done by going to the setting and goto system setting and click on manage storage and select your system storage

My Series X no longer recognises my Samsung T5 external SSD for media. Help!

I'm having the exact same problem. I have a Seagate 5TB external storage that is no longer detectable for multimedia usage after the sept 24 system update on xbox series x. A friend of mine who has a xbox one x is having similar issues with a 4 tb HDD. The bizarre thing is if I connect any HDD with 1TB (or less), it's detectable with no issues. Hopefully this bug is fixed soon.

That makes sense...so let me ask you this...will “not optimized “ games work any slower if I run them from an external hard drive rather than the actual internal drive?

    Thanks for the help
