  1. Xbox Series X Dolby Atmos Audio - Fix

After researching many forums, I couldn’t find a fix for my Xbox Series X cutting/clipping sound randomly while playing Dolby Atmos content. But I think I found a solution,… sort of.

Like many others, I purchased the XSX for games AND media. I wanted something that could play the latest games with all of the eye-candy, Dolby Atmos sound, and play 4K UHD Blu-rays in Dolby Vision.

I have a home theater setup with a LG CX OLED, Yamaha RX-681BL 7.2 AV Receiver, Xbox Series X, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

What’s uncommon in my case is that I wanted them hooked up to a HDMI switcher to route to other rooms throughout the house. So I bought a Gofanco Prophecy 4K Matrix box, capable of supporting 4x inputs and 4x outputs in 4K HDR.. Unfortunately, no one makes a 4K matrix/switch for HDMI 2.1 yet. Even more uncommon is finding 2.1 HDMI cables longer than 15ft. So I had no choice but to go with 2.0B 18Gbps Fiber Optic HDMI cables. But I was fine without 4K/120fps. That’s all that I would miss out on without the 2.1 HDMI cables. Most media and hardware can’t push anything over 4K/60 HDR anyway.

Long story short, the setup was a nightmare. The wiring was a pain to get it all figured out, but once it was done, everything worked flawlessly… except for the Xbox Series X.

I had all of the inputs connected to the 4K matrix/switch, connected to 4x 4K TVs throughout the house. Then came the moment of truth… did it work? Yes. But Dolby Atmos on the XSX was cutting out intermittently.

I researched every possible way to hook this thing up. But in order to switch outputs properly, it needed to be hooked up directly to the 4K Matrix switch box.

I hooked it up to matrix switcher, then connected the output to my AV receiver’s HDMI input. I ran the AV receiver output to the TV to complete the connection.

After configuring the settings on the Xbox, AV Receiver, and TV, I tried to play a 4K Blu-ray. Audio started clipping in Dolby Atmos. I tried a million different configurations to connect it all together. Nothing seemed to fix it.

After looking up everything I could, I decided to mess around with the settings. I noticed that the Dolby Atmos was trying to push too much bandwidth, so I tried something: I decided to play a movie.

The movie I chose to play was a 4K Blu-ray with HDR and Dolby Atmos. After playing it, I immediately shut everything off, then turned everything back on, one by one, and… it worked! So sound clipping on Dolby Atmos.

I think the cause of the problem is the Dolby Atmos format gets stuck on the Xbox with no way to change it until a media requires the appropriate audio format. The format that worked for me is Dolby Atmos/PCM. The settings enabled were “Let Receiver decode audio”, and “audio pass through”.

The trick I found was putting it on a media that has the highest audio requirement with Dolby Atmos selected, then shutting off the Xbox, then Turing it back on.

I don’t know why this works,… but it does. Try it!

    :)

Dolby Atmos on Xbox One X = issue !

    Hi RomiDumitru,

*maybe* this "problem" is exactly how the Dolby Atmos App on Xbox One X works.

Dolby Atmos native content? perfect! Dolby Atmos playback.

No Dolby Atmos? the App upmix current audio track to Dolby Atmos (the headphones features works in this way).

I don't know if is intentional.

Dolby Atmos delay on Xbox Series X

Well yes. The problem is constant. Whenever you’re in a game that uses Dolby atmos or even on Netflix through the series x. It needs a software patch to fix it. Delay is present on all Dolby atmos content

Xbox Series S Audio Passthrough is still broken and it doesn't work for Netflix.

    Geri,

I have the same issue on my Xbox Series X. Audio passthrough works perfectly fine with Disney+, Amazon Prime and Plex. When it comes to Netflix, it doesn't activate passthrough creating audio problems while playing Atmos content. The titles display Dolby Atmos, but there is no voice, only background music and sounds are played.

When will Microsoft fix Dolby ATMOS audio latency on the Xbox?

    Hello jesseinsf94122,

We really appreciate for the time and effort that you have extended to us.

    What we have found out an article for some Dolby errors;

Audio delay on Xbox Series X

Question: Some games or movies on the Xbox Series X have audio/video sync issues, how can we fix this?

Answer: Dolby is currently investigating any A/V sync related issues while playing some games or watching some movies on the Xbox Series X with Dolby Atmos enabled. A/V latency problems normally occur because of specific hardware compatibility issues, faulty hardware, or incorrect configuration on one or more devices. For the Xbox Series X, users should double-check the below checklist to make sure your setup fully supports Dolby Atmos.

    1. Are you connected to your TV or AVR using eARC?

    2. Are you using HDMI 2.1 supported cables?

    3. Does your AVR/soundbar support HDMI 2.1?

    4. Is your TV configured correctly to use eARC?

    5. Is Atmos enabled correctly on your Xbox Series X?

Additionally, one setting in the Xbox Series X that is known to cause some A/V sync errors is the feature to play content in 4k 120hz. This setting has been shown to cause audio delays with some hardware when playing Dolby Atmos content. Microsoft is currently looking into this issue. For a temporary solution, users should change the setting to 60hz.

Please see any of the above items apply to your system and fix as necessary. If you believe all is in correct order, please contact Dolby support to follow up with more troubleshooting.

We hope it worked out well for you. If not, please reply back to this forum to let us know. We will be glad to follow up and help you.

    Sincerely,
