Xbox Series X - Disc Drive Grinding noise

hello!

I've only owned my Xbox Series x for 4 months, 2 months ago when installing GTA 5 it started making a grinding noise in the disc drive.

its honestly horrible and horrendous to listen to, and I'm worried there is a mechanical fault with my machine.

I've scoured the internet for months trying to find possible fixes or find others who are having the same issue, and it most definitely seems I'm not alone. but all other experienced i've noticed from others appear to date back to the launch date, December 2020. nothing from 2021 or 2022 which is why i am inquiring to the community.

I've noticed the grinding sound almost (ALMOST) disappears when placed horizontally, or when something such as a rubber mat is placed slightly underneath the left side of the console in vertical position.

I've also noticed it does not make the sounds when installing smaller games, such as Facry Primal, but it typically occurs during installing much larger games.

however, prior to installing GTA 5, i installed red dead redemption 2 and had no issues. I also had no issues with the entire halo franchise, Halo infinite, resident evil 1 + origins, and battlefront 2!

What i have concluded is that when installing games, the disc drive speeds up at variable speeds, typically intense speeds for heavy downloads. after a while, even if it wasn't a long time, it eventually put strain on the disc drive and trying to install GTA 5 has tipped it over the edge and there may possibly be some sort of loose attachment in the drive.

I still have no issue with small games, as they dont require the disc drive to reach intense speeds, but for almost all larger games i have issues with horrible grinding sounds.

I have 2 year warrenty.

Any sort of grinding noise is not a good sign. Arrange a repair or replacement.

I had to replace a Series X that had a grinding disc drive just 6 months after I purchased it.

Yes, I have spoken to support. the only option for me is to have a refurbished series x sent to me as a replacement. considering mine was brand new, and isn't that old, its a little bit of a turn off.

I'd expect a replacement to have the same level of quality my brand new series x had, not a refurbished one with its own faults.

however, I will eventually get it replaced, but I plan to wait a bit longer.

in the mean time i will continue to troubleshoot. i'll test some blue-ray DVDs to see if the issue persists.

i'll also experiment with dvd's that vary in film duration. I shall also test 4k blue-ray because its more demanding then standard 1080p for the disc drive.

I'll keep everyone updated. my theory still stands that after a certain duration of a high demanding download, the drive cracks up the spinning rotations and when it peaks its speed capacity vibrations become more intense, as a result causing a loose mechanism to knock around the disc drive; creating the horrid grinding sound.

I hope others with the same issue will comment below.

I'm curious if this is still a wide spread issue, normal, or I'm just unlucky.

for an situation like this, I think contacting Xbox Support might be the best option, to see what they advise to do (which could be a service/repair request, since it shouldn't make those sounds as far as I'm aware). To contact Xbox Support use:

You'll never have a 100% silent disc drive when it is reading data from the disc. As long as it is still reading/detecting the disc fine and not a loud grinding noise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hmm, a clicking noise...could be the hard drive.

What's an "overheating sound"? Is the disc drive making grinding noises or something?
