Xbox series X controller issue. Buttons not registering.

Hello guys,

Recently I have a very interesting problem. I have an xbox series X with two controllers (one with the xbox and another i bought a couple of months ago). Both controllers recently started developing an issue with the buttons. Sometimes buttons don't register or after a click they stick as if they are being held and pressed. The issue is visible when i test them from the settings on the xbox and in games.

However, I decided to connect them to my PC and use the controller test app by microsoft and the issue not present there. My suggestion is that this is some software issue on the xbox messing up the connection between the console and controllers.

What I did so far is updating the controllers to the latest firmware. Console already running the latest firmware.

Any ideas how this can be fixed? Thank you in advance.

Thank you! Just try to move the console, it can be on the other side or test it out on a different room but will not permanently move it just to isolate the issue on what is causing it.

The console is next to my TV and there is a router there (for cable connection to the tv and xbox for better performance). Can this be causing an issue? If yes - what can i change? (can't move the console to a another room since there is a 60 inch tv as well there lol)

Thank you so far for your help. After I did reset the console and played like an hour, I did not notice the issue (neither on the test of the controller nor ingame). It seems as some software issue. I really hope Microsoft can patch it. Before I had big issues with controllers randomly disconnecting and having to powercycle the console in order to make them work again. After some controller and firmware updates the issue was fixed (or happening very rarely with some few second disconnections once in a while, but nothing game breaking). A guess in this generation, the controllers are kind of a weak spot. The console is amazing and I really hope we can see some improvements and fixes on the controller connectivity side!

Unfortunately the above did not help. This is a common issue among many with the controllers for the series X and S. Microsoft needs to really put their things together and go for a patch and better controllers. I am close to getting rid of the console because of all these issues. I had drifting, I had connectivity problem and now this. It's a shame that nowadays controllers appear to be such rubbish. Used the controllers for my ps4 pro for years and never had an issue. However, the series x/s ones seen quite inferior.... Sad story

Hi Ianvin, I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regards to your concern.

To fix this, please perform a power cycle on your console by following the steps below:

POWERCYCLE CONSOLE

1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds. The console will turn off.

2. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.

If that didn't work resetting the console keeping games and apps will be the next option. Don't worry because as long as you're connected to Xbox Live your saved progress, games, will not be deleted. It will remove all of your accounts but you can add all of them later on.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.

Select Reset console.

Reset and keep my games & apps.
