XBox series X bluray drive auto select resolution depending on disc

    Hi

I'd like to know if there is a way for the onboard optical drive to change resolution depending on disc inserted instead of just using the XBox resolution. My Xbox is set to 4k 60hz but I would like when a dvd is inserted for it play as 480 or 576 instead of upscaling to to 4k, same with bluray play as 720 or 1080 instead of 4k.

if not possible is there a player i can get from the store that will do it

    Thanks

    :)

    Hi

    Thanks for the response.

I was wondering more about the software, I have a good panasonic thx oled with a great internal scaler and like my movies to be in original res. I use a raspberry pi 4 with kodi to play my ripped dvds and blurays and this is able to play at original res and swap between them automaticaly, i did try the kodi app on xbox and it does the same infact it's very very good, sadly it doesn't allow the onboard optical drive to be used within it.

Looks like i'll stick to ripping blur rays and dvds and playing uhd 4k discs on the xbox unless some new player software arrives.

    Again thanks for helping out.

He’s saying he doesn’t like how the Xbox does scaling, and he wants his TV, or even his external scaler to do it. You can buy devices that cost thousands of dollars for precisely this purpose if you’re into that sort of thing. Enthusiast players will have separate settings for different formats.

This is not an enthusiast device, It’s a mass market, general consumer electronics that happens to have Blu-ray player back as a bonus feature. what Power said that is correct. It’s just one for everything. I highly recommend you pick up that enthusiast model.

If you want that level of granular control, I also recommend you look into a home theater, PC, but please keep in mind that you will need to restrict yourself to the Intel 8 to 10,000 series if you wish to play 4K, as they have removed the hardware, DRM required to make it work, and no one is likely to fix it. Silverstone in particular make some very attractive cases that look good in a rack

Optical drives can't change resolutions, that's not how they work. Only the Blu-ray Player app could do that. It won't because to do so would be to make the picture worse.

Unlike OLD CRT TV's (you know, the big TV's back before modern flat screen LCD TV's were the norm.), modern TV's don't look great running in lower resolutions than their native resolution. Try playing an old, now Retro, console like a Super NES on a 4K TV as apposed to an old CRT, and you'll see what I mean.

If you set the console to 480P on a 4K TV it's going to look soft and blurred and this will translate to a soft and blurred picture when watching a 480i DVD on the Xbox. Modern TV's have upscaling tech too, but there are limitations.

Bear in mind that some films on DVD and even Blu-ray were poorly mastered to begin with. If they're already poor quality, reducing the resolution on a modern TV will likely just make them look worse.

Well, your movies won't be in original resolution unless you're running a 480/576/720 native display.

Your TV will scale to its native resolution if you feed it anything else. So what I said about how you don't like the scaling of the Xbox remains. Any flat panel has one resolution, one refresh rate, and uses hardware and software internally to transform non-compliant formats to fit it. It's that hardware and software that are the real price, and determiner of quality in a display. It's why people claim 30fps looks so bad. They're playing on a monitor that includes none, or very basic/bad of that that is 60hz native. The same game that looks perfect on my 4KTV at 30fps looks terrible on my professional 4K monitor because of this

You're taking an enthusiast device running software written by enthusiasts, same deal as the player.

Kodi can't be used with commercial discs as it lacks a BD license, and even if it had one I doubt they'd be able to implement it on Xbox. This is not a PC, it's a secure walled garden device, not an open multipurpose platform

Yeah, I think if the they are a 'videophile' and want the best possible picture, even on poorly mastered discs, a more premium bespoke player and or upscaling hardware would be required.

Also, if they enjoy streaming from the likes of Netflix, Amazon and have a decent enough TV with these apps built in or available to download as standard, use them. Don't use the apps on the Xbox console as they can't be adjusted for picture quality and HDR brightness as they can on a dedicated TV app. As above, the Xbox is not an enthusiast media player. Since buying my LG C2 OLED, I can't say I've ever run any of the media apps on the console since.
