Xbox Series X Adding Borders Around Videos

Hi,

I just received my Series X (finally... took long enough) and while optimizing games, I'm trying to watch shows via Amazon Prime. However, either my TV or my Xbox continually change the aspect ratio of these videos, adding annoying borders around them and/or stretching them. I never had this problem on my previous One X (on which I was watching videos via Amazon Prime before the Series X came just fine).

I looked at the general TV and display options settings on the Xbox as well as my picture settings on my TV (LG NanoCell):

I changed the setting "allow apps to add borders" to disabled, which did not fix the problem.

I also changed my TV setting "just scan" to off, which also did not fix the problem.

Any ideas? I noticed a setting under video fidelity "display > overrides > auto-detect" but have not attempted messing with this setting yet (not entirely sure what it does). The only things I had done as general "setup" were signing into my account, keeping all the same settings I had before, and calibrated HDR for games.

May we know, does this issue occur with any other streaming application? Or solely the Amazon Prime app?

If the issue resides in just the Amazing Prime app, it could be an app issue rather than an Xbox hardware issue. We suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the Amazon Prime Video app first and seeing if the issue is resolved.

Secondly, we suggest confirming that your HDMI cables are firmly connected to both your console and your TV. Additionally, please make sure that your console, TV and Amazon Prime app are completely updated.

A hard reset of the console has been known to help with this issue as well. You can do this by holding down the Nexus button on the console (Xbox logo button) for ~60 seconds or until the console is completely powered off. Then, unplug the console for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on using the same Nexus button on the console.

If the aspect ratio issue is appearing on only certain Amazon Prime Video rentals or free titles, attempt playing another title to see if the issue persists. If the problem is only with a certain title, contact Amazon for a refund and please ask their support to correct the problem for you.

Amazon Prime Video is typically presented in widescreen. The Amazon Prime Video app does not offer a feature to manually adjust the image aspect ratio. You can, however, try manually converting the video to 16:9 widescreen using your TV. Below is a link to the LG website that details how to manually change your aspect ratio for your TV.

I own a Series X and am currently able to play all Amazon Prime Video titles on my LG TV without any issues. If it helps, my current console display settings are below:

In the Xbox Game Pass library on your Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X by following these instructions:

Go to 'My Games & Apps'

Scroll down to 'Applications' and click on 'Xbox Game Pass'

Scroll down to 'Recently Added'

One has a gold border and "Xbox Series X|S" in square brackets, so this is the one you'll want to download if you're on an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S By downloading this version of the game you will get the latest versions of Story Mode and GTA Online.

There is a setting to allow apps to use a border.

Settings, display and sound, video output, video fidelity and overscan. Toggle off apps can use a border. That should fix it.

On the video, Xbox Series X has USB type A only.

The new controller, I think is type-A (Xbox Series X) to type-c (controller). (Elite2 is a to c usb)

I believe it's down to when the Series X launched, that the hardware in the Series X were almost on par to the best PC components at that time, and of course after about a month or so, newer PC components gets released, making the Series X hardware look outdated, even more so as of right now, over a year and a half later,

As for the initial one off purchase cost's, the Series X compared to a PC, where the PC needs to match the performance of the Series X in all areas, I also think the value of the Series X matches that of a PC costing around £1500 or more, But.... that depend on how the PC is being used and what your wanting the PC to do... which can determine the overall cost of the PC, 1080p gaming, 1440p gaming or 4K gaming,

My PC is valued around £3100 with all the parts added and upgrades done, but I'm gaming at 4K resolution at around 120 -160 fps with mix of high to ultra setting. on a 4K 160hz monitor.

I've seen a few small Youtube tech channels that make claims that they can build a $500 gaming PC's that will annihilate the Series X, yet a over a year and a half later, i'm still waiting to see these so called $500 gaming PC's XSX / PS5 console killers videos, It just can't be done, and if someone does make an attempt at it, I'm wanting to see a dead on $500 gaming PC that can to do 4K at 120fps, and only then, will i believe that they have a so called "console killer".
