Xbox Series X 120 HZ not working on certain games and apps.

I have an Xbox Series X set up on a Sony X85K. The HDMI cable is inserted in HDMI port 3 with Enhanced Format on (no Dolby Vision or VRR). I was able to go to the Xbox’s settings and turn on 120 HZ. It works for most of my games and Netflix and Disney Plus but for the rest of my streaming apps and games such as Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1, the refresh rate is even worse and less smooth than if I had it set to 60 HZ. Motion Smoothing on the tv is set to maximum too. Why is 120 HZ not working in certain areas?

Motion interpolation that is built into television sets is something mostly designed to look good on the showroom floor.

Motion smoothing relies on the cheapest possible computer using the cheapest possible algorithms to guess in real time what those frames might look like. It frequently gueses wrong which is what is almost certainly causing your choppiness. My personal favorite example is the founding ship in pirates of the Caribbean, where it's constantly jerking

You should turn off all forms of motion smoothing for gaming at the very least

Ok but even so, why is the frame rate choppier than if I had it to 60 HZ? Same with certain streaming apps.

Xbox Series X and S consoles support a maximum frequency of 120 Hz. Therefore, you will not able to set or see 60 or 120 Hz.

Besides that, it is important to clarify that you need to check if the monitor you want to get supports 120 Hz via the HDMI port, most monitors support 120 Hz and above via Display Port only.

You can check if your monitor supports 120 Hz via HDMI, if the timing is exactly 120 Hz and not (for example) 119.99 Hz and more by checking the manual or contacting the manufacturer.

HDMI 2.0 only supports 1440p60 or 1080p120.
If you want a higher resolution with 120fps, you'll need a HDMI 2.1 cable.

Your Series S also supports 4k with up to 120fps, just like the Series X.
