  1. xbox series s sound distorting

so it started one afternoon when i was trying to watch youtube and i noticed the sound was off. then i heard a wierd distortion on my xbox home screen as well. i tried netflix and there too. it was literally affecting all my apps, and it would stop for a couple of seconds and start again. only thing that fixes it so far is restarting my xbox which is getting annoying when it suddenly happens randomly multiple times. recently i started up fortnite and the distortion was there too but it doesn't affect all my games, then it also affects xbox parties when it happens now too. i can't seem to find any other articles that talk about the same thing.

    :)

    xbox series s sound distorting

I am having the same issue on my Series X, it's been happening for about a month as well and getting worse. I thought it eas my headset or controller so I replaced both. It is still distorting. I tried your above fixes and neither did anything to help.

    Hello TwitchStreamer3,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing sound distortion on your Xbox Series S. This sounds like a frustrating issue that may have multiple causes. To help you troubleshoot this problem, I would like to ask you a few questions:

    - How long have you had this issue?

    - Have you tried updating your Xbox system software and your apps?

    - Have you checked your audio settings and your TV or monitor settings?

    - Have you tried using a different HDMI cable or port?

    - Do you have any external speakers or headphones connected to your Xbox or TV?

Here are troubleshooting steps you can try to fix the issue:

Check your TV and HDMI connections

    1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options.
    3. Select Video fidelity & overscan.
    4. Under Display, select HDMI.

    Run the Audio setup tool

    1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
    3. Select the Audio setup option under Advanced.
    4. Highlight the audio setup option you wish to use and then press the A button to begin the audio test.

Note The audio setup options in this list will vary depending on the audio setup your console detects. The console will only display the options that are available to test.
    5. Watch the animations displayed as the test is running to determine if the audio is not playing back through a specific speaker in your setup, and troubleshoot that speaker if you notice any playback errors.

Troubleshoot when game or app audio is inaudible during voice chat

If your active game or app becomes quiet or inaudible when you're using Kinect in party chat or on a Skype call, your Chat mixer may be set to focus only on the conversation. To adjust the level of sound while communicating, adjust the Chat mixer settings.

Note The Kinect sensor and Kinect Adapter have been discontinued. You can still use your Kinect with your Xbox 360 or Xbox One, but the sensor is not compatible with Xbox Series X|S consoles.

    1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
    3. Under Advanced, select Additional options, and then select Chat mixer.
    4. Select one of the available options.

Troubleshoot sound issues with an audio-video receiver

If your Xbox console is connected to an audio-video receiver that's connected to your TV and you have no sound, follow these steps:

    1. Use the Input button on your TV’s remote control to switch the input source of your receiver away from the console and then back (for example, HDMI1 to HDMI2, then back to HDMI1).
    2. Restart the audio-video receiver.
    3. Set your TV connection to HDMI. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, then select Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options. Choose the Video fidelity & overscan option, and under Display, select HDMI.

Troubleshoot audio delay issues with an audio-video receiver or soundbar

If you’re experiencing audio or video sync issues when using surround audio formats, consult your TV, receiver, or soundbar manufacturer for performance specifications. Be sure to review their latest support documentation and release notes. Once you’re certain all devices are set up to recommended specifications and all necessary firmware updates are installed, you can set your audio to use eARC passthrough mode on your audio device, if that device supports this mode, to troubleshoot any audio delay issues.

Xbox One X Latest Update Causing Sound Distortion/Compression Problems

I did both of the aforementioned "things to try". Both do not work. I did not receive and errors when I updated and it updated silently.

The sound distortion happens when I turn the Xbox off, and then turn it back on. To remedy, I do a hard reset and the sound is fine. After the Xbox is turned off again, and back on, the sound distortion happens again.

    Cycle for Example:

Power On -> Sound is Fine -> Power Off -> Power On -> Sound Distortion -> Hard Reset -> Power On -> Sound is Fine -> Power Off -> Power On -> Sound Distortion -> Hard Reset -> Power On -> Sound is Fine -> Power Off -> Power On -> Sound Distortion and so
    on and so on...
