Xbox series S shuts off within minutes - says it’s over heating?

Hi. Xbox S seems to be over hearing within minutes of playing the new Harry Potter game. The console is on a flat wood shelf with plenty of air around it.

We noticed this problem when we switched to a new tv. Is it possible that trying to push the graphics to a larger tv that it’s too much for the Xbox to handle? We switched from a 4k 55 inch to a 4K 66 inch.

I have taken the Xbox off the self and dusted it. I even blew air in all the vents. I never hear the fans come on, maybe the fan is broken?

We don’t use the console very much, maybe a few hours a month. I guess I can try moving it back to the smaller tv and see if this continues. Any other ideas. It literally happens for all games, not just Harry Potter. Sometimes we get 5 minutes. Other times just 1-2 before it just shuts off.

Have you tried lowering the resolution to see if that changes the result?

No. Haven’t done that. Is there a setting on the Xbox to do this or do you mean changing it in the TV? I’d rather not have to change the TV settings just for this.

Put your hand over the fan grill, it's almost certainly failed. You should hear the fan spin up to quite audible before it was shut down for overheating if it was functional. you would have to send it in for repair

I checked the resolution. It was set to UHD. If the series S can’t push that resolution why is it an option.

re: the fan, the grill is hot but there is no fan noise or noticeable airflow. For reference when my laptop fan turns on I can hear it and feel it. For this Xbox, there is nothing. I can put my ear right up to it. No fan noise at all. I do t have a reference as I have never used a different Xbox s but I am also thinking the fan is not functional. For those that have an Xbox s - can you hear the fan when it’s functioning normally?
