No, it isn't. I've got a 2TB SATA SSD drive connected to my Series X via USB and I get the same download speed downloading directly to this drive as I do either installing to the Internal drive or the Seagate expansion card.

Speeds of 30 to 50Mb/s is a tiny fraction of what these drives are capable of.

Hello, My name is Jesse. I'm an Independent Advisor and a member of the Microsoft community and I'd love to assist you today.

Yes, the Expansion card is the optimized hard drive for the Series X|S consoles. It may also be an issue with the USB drive you have. Also can you install the game to the internal drive for faster speeds and then move it to the external?

Why can't you play series x games on ext ssd?

    Hi,

The port on the rear Series X and S console for the 1TB expansion card is a custom PCI Express 4.0 port. The expansion NVME SSD is capable of raw speeds of 2.4GB/s and faster when appropriate compression technology is used. This is considerably faster than the 500MB/s of a SATA to USB 3.1 SSD drive attached via USB

So, in answer to your question, no, they're not fast enough. Not only due to the lower speed, but also due to I/O overheads associated with the USB data transfer and the fact that these drives are not fast enough or compatible with newer data compression technique used for the Series X|S titles.

You can install regular un-optimised Xbox One games on an external SSD and benefit from the increased speed over slow mechanical hard drives, but you can't play Series X|S titles on them.

Xbox series X|S alternative high speed storage expansion

    Hi,

No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.
