Xbox Series S - can it be extended with external usb BD drive - to be backward compatible?

It's supposed to be digital console, which also means no backward compatible.

So no way to insert disks you have on 360 or One.

Are there certified USB BD drives that will make this possible?

Or will any BD drive work?

Pljs a external drive would be more then the cost difference

An external dvd drive is 139 bucks at least so assuming 200 bucks coat you lose on ram storage etc

The s series is also designed specifically for non bluray

One when you get a download from xbox it will notice the s series and only give you the nessary files for it

The all digital consoles (Series S & Xbox One All Digital Edition) are designed for users who have only digital games purchased from the Xbox Store or for playing GamePass titles.

If you have a vast collection of Xbox games (OG, 360 & One) on disk then your best looking at the Series X instead of the Series S.

You forgetting abiut thw downsides

Less ram less power and less storage for xbox s/x optimized games you would have only half the storage and almost half the ram with a max of 1tb storage cards to make up for it until we see 2tb cards on the brightaidr non patched games will run off of external
hdd just not patched

No, will not be able to use an external drive for launching physical game discs. But you are still able to purchase digital version of games from the store catalog, including X360 and Xone titles.

No, I did not forget about that, was into buying an extra 1 TB SSD also for Series S/X either way.

But thought it would be ok with Series S regarding power and memory, not targeting 4k.

My installed 70 games today on Xbox One use 1.4 TB(3 TB free), and this is no 4k content that might be forced on you if getting Xbox Series consoles just using disk space. So a couple of downsides going for next gen.

And looking at SSD recently I learned about server grade SSD, that has way longer lifespan - not sure what Series X offer here - you might need to replace in a couple of years.

Only a dozen digital games installed among those if going for Series S.

Now that I have 100/100 mbps on fiber I might do more gaming in future, will see. Still hesitate to download games over 20 GB.

p.s. not sure why notification emails does not work here, it does when buying from store.
