Xbox series controller turns on XBOX automatically after I disconnect from PC USB

I've tried on a different pc and a laptop as well. Its not turning off when connected via USB. Kept the button pushed for 30 seconds. Turning off is only when connected via bluetooth but after 5-10 seconds. So for some reason its not working for me when connected via usb.

the control in use when removing will keep it on, so when removing from the socket, if it's still in the game or in use it will end up turning on your xbox, removing the battery seems to me the best option, since the cable is also used for recharge the battery.

good work around but i am still surprised the controller is not turning off when holding the xbox button, as all my controller do and they are a mix of xbox one controllers and series controllers. regardless if connected via wireless or usb to the pc.

Unfortunately the controller is not turning off for me when it is connected to usb.

But I found a solution today morning.

I've realized when I disable the controller from device manager then power is turning off even if it still connected to USB and when I enable it immediately then it won't power back on. Only powers on when I disconnect from USB then reconnect it.



I created a very simple powershell script which can run on Win10 before the controller is disconnected from USB.

As I have 2 controller and don't want to automate this based on USB device id I used the friendly name of the device.

Of course if the other controller is not connected it also generates some error message, therefore I applied a parameter which prevents displaying the error. This is not the best solution but for this case it should be enough.





The script containing 2 lines:

Get-PnpDevice -FriendlyName "Xbox Controller" | Disable-PnpDevice -Confirm:$false -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Get-PnpDevice -FriendlyName "Xbox Controller" | Enable-PnpDevice -Confirm:$false -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue



I've created a shortcut for the script and set it to run as administrator:

Target content example:

powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:\scripts\Controller_detach.ps1"



It can be useful until a more elegant solution is not found.

press and hold the xbox button for 15 seconds, the controller will turn off then disconnect the cable. thats what i do.
