    I was wondering if the Xbox Series Controller can charge rechargeable AA batteries while attached via the usb-c cable.

    The official rechargeable battery pack doesn't seem to have any data connections on it, only positive and negative power flow.

    So I would assume the controller has a chip inside that stops charging the offical battery pack after a certain voltage is reached, like most rechargeable AA battery chargers.

    What Xbox controller is it?

    If it's an old Xbox 360 Wireless controller, note that these controllers are always wireless. You can't make them wired with a Play and Charge. The P&C only provides power. You need an Xbox 360 gaming wireless receiver. Note: it must be the 360 gaming receiver, the Xbox One dongles are not compatible.

    If your controller is an Xbox One or Series X|S controller, try a different cable. Not all USB A to USB C cables are capable of sending data and power, many are just charging cables.

    In answer to your question, no, using a cable from your console to the controller does not make it wired. The play and charge does not send data, it merely powers the controller and charges any compatible battery.

    The Xbox One controller however will be capable of both wireless and wired connections.

    The Elite controllers never had Bluetooth capabilities until the release of the Elite Series 2, which was October 2019.

    Xbox One accessories and peripherals will be compatible with Xbox Series X. As to whether the rechargeable battery packs are compatible with an Xbox Series X controller, that has not yet been revealed at this time, to my knowledge. However, the new controller
    will use USB-C for its charging port instead of the Play & Charge Kit's Micro-USB plug.
