Xbox repeatedly requesting IP Address

    Isn't a wired connection automatically turning off the WiFi adapter?

    It's defo the wired adapter that is requesting the IP address repeatedly, can tell by the MAC address. And yes, the Xbox is set to automatically obtain IP address and DNS from router. The router is set to always give the Xbox a particular IP (IP Reservation).

    I downloaded Wireshark but not sure how to get results that are meaningful to you.

    Select your interface and start a capture. Use the following line in the display filter field, to filter by IP: ip.addr == x.x.x.x

    Where x.x.x.x is your console's IP address.

    Look for DHCP, or DHCPv6 protocol.

    Hi Taidara, sorry for delay in replying.

    So I've worked out Wireshark, sort of Xbox repeatedly requesting IP Address :). None of the stuff captured re the Xbox has a protocol of DHCP or DHCPv6. All either IGMPv3, SSDP or LLMNR, about 14 rows in total.

    I'm pretty sure the overall answer to my question is no this isn't normal behaviour so will submit feedback via the Xbox One itself and see what reply I get.

    Sorry, just a bit more info. Ran Wireshark on one of my PCs that was turned off and getting the same messages but it's only the Xbox that's showing on the log as requesting a new IP address. Weird huh?

    I'm not sure which table on your router the log message you've posted refers to, but none of these protocols are used to "requesting a new IP address".

    That's what I was thinking, as was getting the same protocols/messages for wife's pc and it's not showing on the router log s requesting IP address, just the Xbox. Weird. Have submitted feedback, see what they say Xbox repeatedly requesting IP Address :)

    May I ask, was your console turned off (Instant-On mode), when you used wireshark to analyze Xbox traffic?

    May I ask what is the make and model of your router?

    Also, if this is not a combined modem/router (single device), what is the make and model of your modem?

    Weirdly, this has stopped. Hadn't checked it in a while so not sure if September update fixed it or what. Will keep an eye it :s

    I'm not sure which table on your router the log message you've posted refers to, but none of these protocols are used to "requesting a new IP address".

    The messages on the log read:-

    Recv REQUEST from <Xbox One MAC address>

    Send ACK to <Xbox One reserved IP>

    And just repeats every couple of minutes. I can see other devices doing this sporadically as you'd expect. I switched the Xbox to wireless last night and it's not doing it anymore so will keep it wireless for now and report it using the feedback option.

    What does that log message actually read? Does this log message also include the sender hardware address (MAC)?

    Taidara, yes that's what I'm trying to say. The Xbox is requesting a new IP address every 2-3 minutes for around 2 hrs after I turn it off. It's set to Instant-On and I use DHCP reservation.

    It doesn't appear to be causing any problems to my other devices or the network in general but doesn't sound like normal behaviour.
