    Xbox repeatedly requesting IP Address

i got a new router at the weekend and while checking the log on it for the last few nights I noticed my Xbox One seems to be requesting an IP address every 3 mins for two hours after I turn it off. Is this normal?

    :)

  2. some guy IP flooded me and Xbox won't do anything about it!!

Flooding an IP address is basically requesting information from the website or ip over and over again until it crashes. Eventually the site becomes slow and crashes as a result of trying to answer so many computers requests.

  3. Manual wired IP address changes on its own

I've been playing wirelessly for the past couple of days and decided to go wired instead. I went in the settings and chose the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway that I wanted. Immediately after I enter these values in, I'm given a different IP address
and subnet mask. It still connects to the Internet and Xbox Live but the network speed is significantly slower. I have attempted to set a manual IP address repeatedly and this happens every single time.

What you can do is set manual ip on the console.

    go to

1)settings>network>advanced settings - write down the IP, gateway, subnet mask

IP settings>manual - type in the addresses that you wrote down in step 1 - should stop console from requesting the IP all the

    -------------------------------------------------------------

TIP: Lets say the IP address that you have currently is 192.168.0.15 when you set manual IP you add 15 to the last number so manual IP would be 192.168.0.30

This prevents other devices taking XBOX's ip address and there wont be conflicts in the future.

    ---------------------------------------------

Then DNS settings and set them manual

Primary DNS 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4

I could do thatbut my question is more is that normal behaviour? Could be a bigger issue at hand if it isn't and setting a manual ip isn't going to help in the long run.

The bigger issue might be in the router since mine isn't doing it. Is there a possibility that you can try a different router?

Sounds like a very low lease time on the dns server but should affect all devices connected to the router then.

Are you connected wired or wireless?

Could dig out the original sky router. Although not sure it has the logging capabilities/options required.

It's definitely only doing it with the Xbox, and its the Xbox that's initiating it with a request. It's wired atm. Lease time is set as 1440 minutes, the router's default.

    Greetings Raynger!

May I ask, do you experiencing any problem with your cosole's connectivity, causing it to be a bit chatty with the DHCP server, whilst being turned off (Instant-On mode?)?

@HairyBuzz - Try to make a static IP outside of the dynamic range of the DHCP server, and not within.

For end-user device, it is better to use DHCP reservation. If this feature is supported.

Taidara, yes that's what I'm trying to say. The Xbox is requesting a new IP address every 2-3 minutes for around 2 hrs after I turn it off. It's set to Instant-On and I use DHCP reservation.

It doesn't appear to be causing any problems to my other devices or the network in general but doesn't sound like normal behaviour.

It wouldn't be a normal behaviour if networking devices would stop talking to one or the other.

By turning your console off in Instant-On power mode, it's still active, not only on your network, but to Live as well.

Are you connected wired, or wireless with your console?

What does that log message actually read? Does this log message also include the sender hardware address (MAC)?

    Xbox repeatedly requesting IP Address

Tip! If you haven't alrady, you can download wireshark (for free), to actually analyze all your data traffic. Wireshark will show you all the active interfaces that are communicating and which protocols each device
    are using.

It would be interesting to know if the source MAC address is actually sending broadcast DHCP messages, or ARP, when switched off in Instant-On mode.

The messages on the log read:-

Recv REQUEST from <Xbox One MAC address>

Send ACK to <Xbox One reserved IP>

And just repeats every couple of minutes. I can see other devices doing this sporadically as you'd expect. I switched the Xbox to wireless last night and it's not doing it anymore so will keep it wireless for now and report it using the feedback option.

You don't have to go wireless, since this shouldn't cause any conflicts.

Which interface on your console is sending the request? If I would have to guess, I say the wireless interface.

Have you had the chance to try Wireshark yet?

As per my previous post, it would be most interesting to know if this interface is actually asking the DHCP server, or if it is the continuous stream of redundancy messages, in the shape of ARP.

Is your console's network settings set to automatically obtain IP configuration and DNS from your router?
