Xbox Originals Not Working - Is It The Hard Drive?

I bought the original Xbox versions of Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for use on my 360 S. Whenever I try to play them I get the message "The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." I tried Battlefield
3 to see if it worked and it booted up straight away as normal so the problem is with original Xbox games. According to

this it says that it's common for users who get their hard drives off eBay after buying a 4GB version to get problems (which is exactly what I did). Apparently some of them aren't official and lack specific hardware that allows the backwards compatibility.
So is this likely the cause? Is there a reliable place where I can get official Xbox 360 hard drives so I can play these games? After removing the hard drive I got a message saying "You need an official Xbox 360 hard drive to play Xbox Originals" or something
along those lines. Wouldn't I have gotten this message before if the hard drive was fake? Or does it just assume the hard drive is legitimate because it fits and gives a generic 'game doesn't work' message?

This seems to be an issue with your XBOX 360's Hard Drive. Since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an original XBOX game it requires that an original XBOX hard drive be attached in order to play the game successfully. It freezing suggests that the files that
are on the hard drive in a hidden partition are not working as they should be. I suggest trying another original XBOX hard drive to see if this alleviates the problem. You will not be able to download the game onto a USB Flash Drive and play it unfortunately.

While your hard drive might be a new Official Xbox Hard drive, they have been known to not play the originals like they are supposed too. The hard drive has the emulator needed to run the originals. Working DLC are not a sign that the emulator is working.
I understand it is not a knock off or anything like that, but uninstalling the system update and re installing it has helped a lot of people with a similar problem. so follow StuartATrueRed instructions. If that does not work, post back and let us know.

 

Battlefield 3 is not a good tester as it is a current gen game. You would need to test with another Xbox Original.

Now, although it may be possible that the hard drive is the culprit (yes, it is possible to purchase 3rd party drives online) the big issue here seems to be that none of those games are supported with backwards compatibility.

However, if you would like to get a new hard drive then your best bet would be to purchase one from your local video game retailer.

 

All of the Splinter Cells are supported. Look at the list again, press CTRL+F then type in Splinter Cell and go down all the matches. I got it fixed anyway, but thanks for your answer. It turned out to be the hard drive after all.

 

My mistake. I was looking for Splinter Cell, not Tom Clancey's Splinter Cell. lol

 

The list isn't very accurate...there are titles on there that say they're supported but they're not really, or not fully. (EG, Mechassault 2 is supported, but certain options or game scenarios crash the game)

I'd check the wiki page, but even there. If all else fails, then it probably is the hard drive, and a mucked up BC partition ...Which they should really fix if that's the issue...Just a firmware upgrade...Unless of course there isn't enough room on a 4GB
console for that partition...in any case, try that, if nothing pans out, contact Xbox Support directly.

Irixion, it has nothing to do with a "mucked up BC partition". Only Microsoft official hard drives have the emulation software installed on them. This software comes built in to the hard drives and cannot be downloaded separately. The internal 4gb is
not a hard drive but rather flash memory. There is no way to have the emulation software on the internal memory regardless of how much space is there. The OP purchased an unofficial drive and that is likely his problem. Calling support will do nothing.
