Xbox One won't get a television DVR feature after all

Back at Gamescom in August, Microsoft announced that the Xbox Onewould be getting a
    DVR feature
for over-the-air TV this year. Well, if you got your hopes up about the add-on, we've got some bad news. The company has confirmed to Engadget that the tool is no longer being added to the console. Why the change of heart? Microsoft
cites a decision to focus on "new higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10." While the company says development is "on hold," there's no indication that it will pick the project back up at a later date.

When the DVR tool was announced last year, Microsoft said users would be able to stream recorded content via the SmartGlass app for Android and iOS or the Xbox app on Windows 10. Apps would've also offered the ability
to schedule recordings while on the go through OneGuide and that the content would be stored on an external hard drive. The addition
of the DVR would've made the console a more complete TV solution, at least for over-the-air shows.
However, it appears the company has turned its focus solely on gaming, and we should hear more about that topic at next week's E3. Here's the full statement from Microsoft.

The internet spoke out...those who wanted more media in their console were not loud enough...case closed, consoles are supposed to be only for gaming. On a side note, at any given hour, 25-65% of my friend list is consuming media of some sort (i.e. not playing
    games).

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!! Get it together Microsoft!! I've stood by the XBOX One since launch, through all the negative press that it was focused too much toward TV and not gaming. I'm a cord cutter, this IS my entertainment center. How about throwing
a bone to those of use who use it this way everyday??!!

I also purchased additional hardware in anticipation of this feature. Digital tuner, large external HDD, media remote. Yes, not denying my actions were stupid..

I am seriously upset about this! I was looking forward to this feature. I chose to purchase the Xbox One instead of the PS4 at the time because I liked the ideal of a multitasking console. No one minds a multitasking phone or PC for instance, but a console,
It's the end of the world! Contrary to popular beliefs, the media features did NOTHING to keep the Xbox One from being a GAMING CONSOLE. It just gave more functionality to those that chose to use it. (The fact that the One is "slightly" less powerful than
the PS4 is due to what Microsoft chose to put in it and had nothing to do with their chosen media features). With Microsoft continuing to listen to these so called "hardcore gamers" they are stripping away everything that made the Xbox One unique among the
competition and trying to turn it into a PS4 clone. To make matters worse, most people are still buying PS4s over the Xbox One while keeping Microsoft looking like promise breakers to their faithful supporters and clueless flip floppers to everyone else. SHAMEFUL.

This is beyond annoying. When this was announced happened to coincide when my home broadband/tv package was due to be renewed. On the basis that I would no longer need cable, as I could manage with Netflix/Prime and a Sky Now TV subscription. I cancelled
my Tivo subscription, paid for a new aerial to be installed on my house, and bought the OTA tuner. I would not have done any of that had it not been for the promise of DVR for Xbox. I am now out of pocket for no reason. Anyone want to buy a TV tuner?

^^ Voicing our opinion on this matter will not change anything because Microsoft is not listening to us, they are listening to "hardcore gamers" fanboys (read excerpt in op's post), who could care less about Xbox or us who still believe in Microsoft and
    their promises.

Maybe they should have named this console the Xbox Flip Flop.

This doesn't bother me since I wouldn't have downgraded from my TiVo anyway, but it could have been useful for others. Too bad it will probably never be a reality now that it's "on hold" indefinitely.

  14. Cord Cutters!- Did you want XB1 DVR functionality?. Did you purchase a tuner and external for this?. This feature in serious jeopardy never to see the light of day. Vote it up at

Also I tweeted Mr Spencer on this also. Our voice is the most powerful tool we have on this.

It's announcements like this from Microsoft - too many of them over the past couple years - that have caused me to be completely indifferent about the hoopla surrounding E3. They've underachieved, swept under the rug, or completely dead-ended too many of
their big ideas for me to get excited about anything that they might wish to trumpet. I do hope they come up with some big ideas, and also the backbone and wherewithal to actually execute them.
