Xbox One X SSD External Drive Stopped Working

My SSD External drive I use for video files stopped working yesterday and cannot get it working again. I've narrowed the issue down to SSD External drives in general. Other non-SSD external drives work fine.

    What I've done:

    Tried different USB ports

    Tried different cords

Tried 2 different SSD drives - both don't work (though previously had)

    Tried 2 non-SSD drives - both work

Did the reset by holding the power button for 10 seconds

Restored the system - didn't delete game data

    Other details:

    Both SSD work in PC

    Reformatted SSD

    Firmware on SSD is up-to-date

SSD was connected to Xbox entire time - just stopped working yesterday

    Xbox system updated yesterday

Xbox lists both SSD as 0.0GB free - incorrect

Xbox lists both SSD by default name - not the name I gave it and PC shows

Any idea how to fix the issue? I can't find anything else to do to make my Xbox correctly read SSD external drives again. The only thing I can think of is the Xbox update causing the problem as it worked before that update; but no issues have been reported that I can find and no solution if it is.

    :)

Thinking of picking up an SSD for Xbox Series S

Bear in mind, even faster SSD external storage only works for Xbox One and Xbox One X enhanced games. They won't work with Series X|S games. You can store these games on these drives, but you can't play them.

NVME is a waste of money as the USB 3.1 ports maximum bandwidth is 5Gb/s (or 500MB/s).

If you want an SSD for your Xbox One or Xbox One X enhanced games, then your best choice is a SATA SSD connected either via a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor or an USB 3.1 external drive enclosure.

    Choosing a hardrrive

Fair enough, a slow internet connection is as good excuse as any.

Be aware however that while that drive will work on Series X, you won't be able to play Series X games directly from it. Series X games will require faster access and read speeds. My understanding is that the Series X games can be 'backed up' on an external
drive and then need to copied/moved over to either the internal SSD or the External SSD's that will be available for the machine.

The Series X will read and play Xbox One games from an external drive though.

Hello dear Gamer, first it's a pleasure to be able to help you today.

    My name is Vinicius.

I am a gamer and independent advisor on the XBOX community platform.

Hey mate, how are you today? Hope you're well.

So, since it stopped working after an update, it might be some bug within the OS indeed, have you tried to do an offline update?

    https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-ne...

In the link above go to the tab: "Download OSU1 System Offline Update File"

If your console is the Original Xbox One:

Important! For Build 6.2.9781.0, use the OSU3 Offline System Update file. For all other builds, use the OSU2 file.

Go to the tab: "Download offline update file from OSU2 or OSU3 system"

    Hi,

Your drive will work the same on Series X as it does on Xbox One and you won't need to format it.

However, Series X games or Xbox One games with Series X enhancements will not run from that drive and will either need to be installed internally or to an external SSD designed for Series X/S.

Your hard drive will be too slow for Series X games. They can be stored there, but not run from there.
