Can someone clear up exactly what the Xbox One X is doing with audio? Using Bitstream\Atmos options I am noticing so issues with the X that none of my other devices have so I am trying to determine if the atmos implementation is just poor or broken. This
is coming from a sound and audio enthusiast with a dedicated theater room. So I’d like to ask some questions and address them.

    1) For NON atmos games, is the Xbox One X sending Dolby Surround? As far as I can tell it is. and this needs to stop or be an option. I can’t think of a single reason a user wouldn’t want this option. The main reason is you’d rather have your receiver
mixing the audio especially for spatial sound. For example, if its not a native atmos track, I would have my receiver take the original audio track and decode as I saw fit, say Neural X so all channels are involved. What it appears the One X is doing is passing
Atmos off in a Dolby Surround container so the user does not have the option to upmix the container so when it hits the receive you cant choose how you want this mixed. What that means is for anything other than a native atmos track, your sound adoptions
are poorer period as you’re essentially forced to pick audio options based on title. So lets say it was Halo 5 and you would have to go to audio settings on One X turn off Atmos option and bitstream to your receiver so you could change it Neural X or Dolby
    Surround or whatever you want.

    2) Is there a reason for the significant change in dB for all speakers when a party is created without a mic? Is this by design? I haven’t gotten my meters out to measure by tracks drop volume wise significantly when you create a party and have no mic.
If you plug in mic it rises. Its faster and easier just to create a party without a mic that stops you from having to make changes in game or mute all players each round if you’re not interested in using comms or say you have a party open incase anyone joins
then you plug in your mic. It deadens the sound and its extremely noticeable.

    3) I can test this but may as well throw this out here. If you turn off the Atmos option in audio settings, when using the UHD player, will this still play an atmos track in an atmos package? What would the behavior be with atmos games if you had bitstream
    Dolby?

Microsoft has marketed the One X as a “higher end” device so I am just hoping to get some clarification based on my usage case which is essentially that Atmos in general appears to be broken or poorly implemented. Users usage case needs to be more flexible
with Xbox settings. I have 4 ceiling speakers for a 5.4.4 set up. I would like to see an option to choose 5 or 7 channels give the receiver the chance to do its job correctly for non atmos tracks vs just saying I have surround sound and the system throws
7 channels at it or in atmos settings case Dolby surround when no atmos track is available. Again, that option stops you from using the expensive features in your receiver and essentially stops height\ceiling speakers from playing the way they should (like
on competitors consoles). Yes you can choose uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 but then you lose Atmos in game for atmos enabled tracks (I can test this as I am not completely sure what the One X does here). Maybe the answer is to throw 5.1 or 7.1 and if a game like
Gears of War 4 is atmos it sends all channels of audio. My guess is it would strip out all channels and you lose atmos. Hoping someone can clarify. Thanks!!!

    :)

In-game Sound Issues Xbox One X

Depending on your 4K Televison Brand/Model, you may experience “sound loss” within games that are “4K Enhanced” or contain “4K Assets” on your Xbox One X.

According to support & your television manufacturer the “proper” set-up to obtain “4K” on your Xbox One X you must do the following:

    1. Use either the HDMI Cable PROVIDED with your Xbox One X and/or an HDMI Cable that supports “4K”

    2. Ensure that your HDMI Port supports “4K” transfer abilities/rates (this varies) with various television manufacturers

    3. Make sure to “switch” your HDMI connection to “Enhanced” (various TV’s have something similar in the TV Settings, consult your Owner’s Manual for your TV)

    4. Under Settings>Display & Sound Make sure you are set to “4K” on your Output to TV

    5. Under Settings>Display & Sound> Advanced Settings you will see boxes that can be “checked” surrounding “4K” capabilities for YOUR TV

Here is where the solution lies for remediation of “Sound” issue:

Under “Advanced Details” (4K), there is an option to select “Allow YCC 4.2.2.2”

IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH “IN-GAME SOUND” UNCHECK this “BOX” as it SHOULD resolve your issue.

Please be advised that even if your TV supports this “option”, it is known to cause “issues” with “4K” & “Enhanced” titles on the “X”.

    Hope this helps!

Xbox One X - Sound Issues

I'm having this exact problem but the workaround didn't work for me.

According to my wife, earlier today the Xbox (One) gave her an error about the HDMI cable not working, so she switched it out for another one, but hasn't used the console since then. I turned it on, no audio. I get sound fine through the TV from other sources, so it's not the TV, definitely the Xbox.

I switched back to the old cable, no error, but also no audio. Power cycled the console, unplugged, tried different input ports on the TV, no luck. As with Cy, if I crank the volume to max I can very faintly hear the sounds that it's supposed to be making.

I also get audio fine if I plug a headset into the controller.

I've been through all of the online trouble shooting with no luck. I just tried a factory reset and weirdly the sound has gotten slightly, almost imperceptibly louder, but still functionally not there.

UPDATE: The problem seems to have resolved itself somehow. The sound didn't work last night when I shut off the TV, and when I turned it on today after work it worked perfectly. My wife said she rebooted the TV earlier, and while that didn't work before,it's the only thing that she did with it today; she hasn't even used the console today.

So yeah, no idea how or why but the problem has been resolved.

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

Interesting. I've never seen this workaround before. Perhaps what helped to solve the problem was also turning off the console by pressing the power button until it turns off. This is what we call a power cycle.

    UPDATE WITH RESOLUTION!!!!

In my frustration I gave up troubleshooting after everything I had done and began typing this question. My wife wanted to attempt to fix it so she watched a YouTube video instructing her on how to completely power off the Xbox by holding the power button. Once it was shut down, She checked the back of the Xbox. To preface this:

I had the Xbox plugged into the TV with an HDMI cable and plugged into the wall with the power cable. There was a different HDMI cable that i had used for testing laying next to the Xbox that was connected to the TV as well. My Wife unplugged the HDMI cable from the "To TV" Port and plugged that same cable into the other HDMI port on the Xbox. She then plugged the other HDMI cable that was laying next to it into the Xbox's main HDMI port (To clarify there are now two HDMI cables plugged into the Xbox). Then she unplugged the power cable (with the Xbox already off completely), plugged it back in, and powered on the console. When it powered on it was magically working fine again, and continued to work fine when I unplugged the secondary HDMI cable from the port that leads to a cable service. I had already tested this theory with both cables and multiple ports, and the only thing she did that i had not tried was plugging an HDMI cable into that second HDMI port. My only thought is that something was stuck software wise on the HDMI chip and "activating" that second port kicked it back in. I have a degree in IT with 3+ years of job experience and I have no clue what could have caused that, but if any Xbox Technicians see this post I would be very interested to here any possible ideas as to what would have caused it.

Xbox One S all games crashing

    Thanks for the clarification.

It's sounding like the issue may be related to internal storage. Let's give an Xbox One a full factory reset a try by removing both games and apps. Unfortunately
you'll need to reinstall your titles but this should hopefully clear up the issue.

Call of Duty Modem Warfare crashes no matter what type of game I choose.

Have any other games crashed like this? I have an Xbox One X and have no issues launching and playing Modern Warfare. It almost sounds like you have a hardware issue with your Xbox One X. Is the unit still under warranty?
