Xbox One X Ozone Smell / Heat

Hello,

Is it normal for there to be sort of an "ozone" or "hot plastic/electronics" smell associated with the Xbox One X? I have a Scorpio Edition that for the most part seems fine, but when playing graphically intensive games (Wolfenstein II in particular) starts
to emit a fairly faint ozone type smell from the back of the unit ones the fans really start to get going. Playing "normal" games like Destiny 2 doesn't seem to cause this issue -- it's always when the fans really start to kick up.

My wife actually noticed it first from about 10 feet away from the unit, asking if there was something burning in the house. The unit is on top of a table, nothing within a foot of any side of it. Otherwise, the xbox is performing fine, and I haven't had
any lockups or crashes, even when playing for 3-4+ hours, but I'm concerned that something is being pushed to the limit and I'm going to end up with a blown PSU or some other overheated component.

Since it's a Scorpio Edition, I'm somewhat reluctant to take it back and most likely end up with a normal edition, but I also don't want to end up with the thing melting down.

So is this a normal thing during a break in period, or am I headed towards disaster?

The smell is actually the result of a thin layer of ozone forming on the screen of your monitor due to the static created by the tiny mechanical shutters in your LCD display.

Sorry about the problems you having. Couple of questions.

Where or how did you purchase your console? Was it direct from Microsoft? If it was not direct from MS, your quickest option is to return it to the seller. Under UK consumer law, it is the seller that needs to arrange to replace/repair a faulty product.

How do you have console connected to the power? Is it directly into the wall socket or via an extension plug?

Most new electronics do this. For nerds it is like a new car smell. Since the one X has a fan that can really push some air it will blow that smell around. Usually it fades after the parts have finished oxidizing and other adhesives settle down. If it
is running normally, not freezing, or other issues you should be fine. It also has a 1year warranty if something goes wrong.

I understand. The smell of plastic or smell of a hair dryer is dependent on the amount of heat produced by your console. If it's not that too hot, that should be fine. But if you observed that the smell is too strong like it's burning plastic on a regular usage, please send it for replacement or repair.

To further isolate the issue, try to use a different app or game and see if one them is causing the heat issue.

It’s not the heat that worries me. It’s the hair dryer smell.

Sorry your X if giving a smell. Hard to say without actually smelling it, but I would let it run a bit. It's either one of two things, either a bad console, or new electronics. First, make sure it's in a well ventilated area. If it appears to work well,
then just keep watching it, and see if the smell goes away. If you're still having issues with the smell, then you can see if the retailer has replacement Scorpio editions, which I doubt they do, in which case you would need to do a warranty replacement
here.

Like I said though, I would for sure let it go a bit and watch it closely. Sometimes new electronics just smell funny when they heat up for the first time.
