    XBox One X microphone muted

Hi my sons xbox one x microphone seems to be muted. He can hear his friends but they can't hear him. There is also a little symbol on the top right of the screen that show a microphone with a strike across it ( im guessing it represents mute) He is new to xbox and we've looked at all the xbox settings plus the privacy and security settings. We've configured the controller and have it assigned to his profile but nothing seems to work. I hope someone can help.

    :)

    XBox One X microphone muted

Thank you for contacting us! I'm Anderson, an Independent Consultant and a Microsoft user like you.

    Good Morning

    There are two possibilities:

1 - the standard p2 plug of the headset, it needs to be CTIA by default, if it is OMTP the microphone does not work precisely because it is on the wrong channel.

2 - connection problem, a NAT other than open can result in problems like this.

    What is NAT:

NAT is nothing more than a protocol that translates IP addresses and TCP ports from the local network to the Internet. In other words, the packet to be sent or received from your workstation on your local network goes to the server where your ip is exchanged for the server ip and the replacement of the local network ip validates the sending of the packet on the internet. When the package is returned, the same thing happens, but in reverse. Which guarantees that the package reaches its destination.

    Why is NAT important?

Your NAT type, combined with other players' NAT type, determines whether you can successfully use multiplayer games or group chats. The following tables illustrate the differences between NAT types. And based on your NAT type, who you can play multiplayer games with and who you can listen to in a group chat.

    OPEN NAT

You can chat with other people, as well as host and participate in multiplayer games with people who have any type of NAT on the network.

    MODERATE NAT

You can chat and play multiplayer games with some people; however, you may not hear or play with others and you will probably not be chosen to host a match.

    STRICT NAT

You can chat and play multiplayer games with people who have an OPEN NAT type. You cannot be chosen to host a match.

    NAT NOT AVAILABLE

You will not be able to use group chat or connect to multiplayer games on some Xbox Live titles.

To solve the first case just another headset with the correct pattern.

    For the second:

You can check your connection speed using any online speed test, such as http://speedtest.net. Good minimum download and upload speed values are:

    Download speed: 7.5 Mbps

    Upload speed (recommended): 1 Mbps

    Upload speed (minimum): 0.5 Mbps

Note: If you are using a wireless connection, it might be a good idea to try using an Ethernet cable connection to see if the problems persist.

Check your NAT (Network Address Translation) type settings

NAT Type Settings on Xbox One

Navigate to the system panel and choose "Settings"

Highlight "Network" and select "Network Settings"

    network settings

Your connection type and NAT type will be displayed.

A more open type of NAT will have fewer conflicts with other players' systems and will encounter fewer connectivity issues with other players.

    NAT Type Definitions

OPEN NAT Type: Able to play any type of NAT.

MODERATE NAT Type: Able to play both open and moderate NAT types.

STRICT NAT Type: Able to play only with open NAT types.

If the NAT type appears as Unknown, click "Test NAT Type".

    Test NAT Type

Check your firewall and router for NAT type restrictions

If you have a firewall or some other networking hardware, such as a router, you might need to access them to change their NAT type. Sometimes this configuration change is caused by opening or redirecting other network ports.

    Check your open network ports

Xbox Live requires the following ports to be open:

    Port 88 (UDP)

    Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

    Port 3544 (UDP)

    Port 80 (TCP)

    Port 500 (UDP)

    Port 4500 (UDP)

Change the server domain name (DNS)

Open the guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller

Move it to the right to the System tab.

    Select Settings

    Select Network

    Select Network Settings

    Select Advanced Settings

Write down your current DNS which is present on this screen

    Select DNS Settings

    Select Manual

Enter the following DNS servers (Google)

    Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8

    Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

    Restart your router

You can reset your router by unplugging it and waiting about 10 minutes. Restart the game client and see if the issue is resolved.

    Additional troubleshooting steps

Check with your internet provider if they are having problems connecting with us or if there is a temporary outage.

Make sure your router's firmware is up to date (check with your internet provider).

Enable or disable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) in your router or system settings.

If you have a combination modem and router or ADSL, try setting the device temporarily to Bridge mode. This will make it ignore the equipment's internal router. If this solves the problem, you may be able to connect to another router between your previous device and the console to use PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet).

If you use an ADSL connection, check if dialing a PPPoE connection from your console improves the NAT type.

    Sir Lancealot 83.

The microphone is muted, not the headset.

Mic appears to be stuck on mute.

Hi, in party there is a setting to mute your microphone, if that is pressed it mutes your microphone without turning the light on the headset on.

Check in your party settings to see if your microphone is muted. If this works for you or if you need more help, post a reply! :)

    Xbox one stuck on mute

Has the headset ever worked before on the Xbox One controller?

If the headset works on other devices (e.g. smartphone), but has never worked on the Xbox, the plug on the headset might be different from the CTIA standard the Xbox requires.

There are two headset plug standards: CTIA and OMTP. For both, the microphone and ground connector are reversed. So if you plug an OMTP plug into a Xbox controller, the controller is "listening" for a microphone on the ground connector, and the headset is
sending the microphone signal to the controller's ground.

You can resolve this by buying a cheap OMTP to CTIA adapter, which simply switches the connectors.

If the headset worked on the Xbox before, ask your son to compose a voice message. Have him record the voice message and listen to it. If the microphone works for the voice message, but is muted during party chat, your son might accidentally muted the partychat
and/or himself by pressing X on the party menu.
