Xbox One X - Headset Audio Issues via Controller

Hi All,

I am having issues with sound via one of my controllers.

The headset is OK. Tested on another controller. (Plugged into jack.)

For the controller I have the issue with:

Headset is plugged into the jack. (It is not a wireless headset.)

No sound for games or apps (see Call of Duty below).

Have checked volume on headset.

Have updated the controller.

In the settings they match the controller that works OK (volume/chat settings/etc). It recognises a headset is plugged in.

In Call of Duty audio options, there is a microphone test option. The microphone test does work and I can even hear my test words through the headset - but for the CoD game generally and any other apps/games there is no sound.

The other controller with the same headset works absolutely fine. (I have tried with both controllers connected to the Xbox wirelessly and wired.)

If the jack was somehow damaged, I doubt I would be able to hear the mic test words via the headset?

I am completely stumped. It may be a case of me spending so much time looking at this I've missed the bleedin' obvious.

Any thoughts/pointers?

For xbox one controllers and xbox series controllers

by bluetooth if your pc has this (does not support audio passthrough so no headest support via controller).

by wire (this supports audio passthough for headsets via controller)

by purchasing the xbox wireless adapter for pc (this supports audio passthough for headsets via controller)

Here is how I understand the whole headset compatability works (maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong):

GAME AUDIO

If your headset gets the game audio via a box linked to your gaming machine via optic audio out - this audio will continue to work as designed, as the xbox One has optic out as well.

CHAT AUDIO

If your headset gets the chat audio via a direct bluetooth wireless link to the xbox360 machine - then this headset will not work with chat audio on the xbox One.

If your headset gets the chat audio wireless via a bluetooth puck that plugs into the 360 controller (not a direct wireless link to the gaming machine) -then this may work with the xbox One depending on how the forthcoming adapter works with next gen controllers.

If your headset gets the chat audio via a cable directly connected to your xbox360 controller - then this may work on the xbox One depending on how the upcoming adapter works with the xbox One controller.

I'd not considered an adapter as an option, I will look into that.

Hello PaulB_0612, sorry to hear you're having trouble with your headset.

As much as I know you don't want to hear this I do believe the issue is with the controller itself as your other one works fine. Even though you can still hear yourself in the headset when testing and the system hears your voice the 3.5 mm jack could still be loose but with just barely enough of a connection to give a false test with the sound. This is proven by the fact the other controller is working fine with the headset.

To prevent the other controller from eventually doing the same thing I would recommend either getting an Xbox Headset Adapter for your controller or upgrade to a compatible wireless headset.
