Xbox One x gets a black screen when using 1440p at 120hz

The Xbox One X supports 120hz only at 1440p and 1080p resolutions. It does not support 120hz at 4k. So unless your TV or monitor supports 1440p resolution (many don't), you will only get 1080p when selecting 120hz.

You're a little discombobulated there.

I can display 1440p ONLY at 144Hz, and cannot at 120Hz on Xbox. I can only display 1440p at 60Hz on Xbox one X.

Yes I can display 1440p at 60Hz with Freesync - Although 120Hz without Freesync would still technically be better but unfortunately that is not possible with the restrictions on Xbox one X.

I use 1440p @ 60Hz settings with Freesync and HDR with 32 bit color. I get a pretty damn good picture but I'm just a little upset I can't use the 120Hz feature.

This is interesting, as that's the exact problem I have now on my Xbox One S.

I have been playing at 1440p 120Hz for the past year on an Acer Nitro VG271U, with no issue whatsoever. A couple of days ago, it started randomly blacking out for a few seconds at a time (a few times an hour). I did a hard reset today to try and solve the
problem, but I ended up getting a perma-black screen with menu boops playing through my headset.

Nothing I did would bring video back, even unplugging and replugging it in. Using an old 1080p TV i have, i managed to get it to boot (in 640x480 for some reason), set it to 1080p, then plug it back into my monitor to get a Full HD signal. If I then turned
it to 1440p it's fine (i think, haven't played it for long with this setting), but when I put it to 120Hz it just goes totally black, and I have to repeat the above stages to get any life out of it. Interestingly enough, on the 1080p TV one cable glitched
out at 1080p 60Hz, but the other one didn't. Given that these are all 1.4 cables, that worries me immensely.

Thankfully, this not being an isolated case would indicate it is a software issue... but there's no knowing if the GPU is dying until it's gone, at which point it's too late...

I am not sending my xbox to get repaired A MONTH before the new consoles come out, while FIFA 21 is in the birthing stages - I will play on 720p until it breathes it's last fan-breath if that's what it takes to keep it going.

Many thanks for your response but I'm afraid you are mistaken. HDMI 2.0 has always supported 1440p at 120hz. Even the article you sent says this.

"The HDMI 2.0 connector was previously featured on Xbox One X and Xbox One S, with bandwidth limitations locking content to 4K resolution at 60Hz, or 1440p at 120Hz"

So my question remains How do I get 1440p at 120Hz on the xbox series X with the huawei mateview gt34 monitor that is capable of supporing this?
