Xbox One X - Fan Noise

Just purchased the Xbox One X and I can hear the fan working. It isn't loud but if I mute or turn the TV low, I can hear it. I do have it set to 4k video. My 2013 original Xbox didn't
make any noise. I assumed with the upgrade to the One X, it would be silent. I am playing NBA 2k19 or Assassins Odyssey, I can hear it even when the game volume is low/medium. I don't blast my sound, it's at a comfortable level and I can hear it work. I am
sitting maybe 5 feet away. I have included a picture of how it sits in my tv stand. Am I supposed to hear the fan work like that?

    Xbox one X fan noise

Wolfenstein II: The new Colossus and Warhammer: Vermintide 2 are both Xbox One X enhanced games that are being rendered at 4K, which is more taxing on the graphics hardware, and therefore produces more heat.

And therefore the fan of the console has to run faster to get rid of the heat. So the fan being louder compared to whenever you play a non-Xbox One X enhanced game, is normal.

I don't know your actual speaker or headset setup, but whenever I play on my Surround Sound system or through my headphones when my wife is asleep, I don't hear the fan on my console, no matter what game I play.

While the console is quieter than other consoles when you play "normal" Xbox One games, watch Videos or have the console idling on the Home Screen, games that demand full processing power because they are Xbox One X enhanced, will cause the fan to spin faster,
and therefore being louder than normal.

The One X it's not silent like the 2013 Xbox...it's slightly more rumorous, but you can try to put the console out of there maybe on the top of a shelf and stand it vertical? It's more silent that way but in every case more rumorous than the 2013 Xbox.

NBA 19k and Assassins Creed Origin are
listed on this page as being Xbox One X enhanced
    .

This means, that these enhanced games demand more processing power on the Xbox One X compared to other (older, non Xbox One X enhanced) games.

More processing power creates more heat that has to be cooled by the console's fan. The Xbox One X tries to do that with a fairly "intelligent" fan control, where the console tries to run as silently as possible, but intermittently the console has to turn
up the fan in short bursts to dissipate the heat caused by the higher processing power.

While the Xbox One X has an improved cooling system thanks to the vapor chamber that makes the console run quieter compared to the "older" Xbox One generation, you need to be aware, that the console can't break the laws of physics, thermodynamics and aerodynamics.
So you will never have a "silent" console in that form factor. For a completely silent 4K system, you would have to have several passive cooling elements that are as big as the whole console itself. So an active (noise producing) fan is still necessary to
get a console that still fits into a regular TV shelf.

The more processing power a game demands, the more heat the chips produce, and the faster the fan has to spin to generate enough air flow to cool the console.

Under "normal" gaming conditions, where you have the game sound turned up to regular room volume, you should only hear the console if you specifically listen for the fan.

And of course, if you mute the sound completely, you will hear the higher speed fan bursts that happen intermittently when running Xbox One X enhanced games.

Whenever you run non-enhanced games, you'll hear that the console does not do these faster fan bursts that cause the console to become louder.

  6. Hi,

There is a fan sound with the One X, it's completely normal. The only time the machine would be almost silent is playing none enhanced titles. The machine gets warm especially playing enhanced games. A temperature sensor would record 65c at the rear of the
    unit, quite normal.

That being said, the fan should not be in any way annoying or disruptive to your game experience. If Xbox One X sounds overly loud, like a 'vacuum cleaner' or a 'jet engine' something is wrong.

Only the PS4 Pro sounds like it's going to 'take off', normal for that machine (I've got one), not the One X.

My day one Scorpio is approaching PS4 pro god of war levels of fan noise. It was virtually silent even playing enhanced games like gears 4, rise of the tomb raider, etc... Now they produce high fan noise. It really ruins the peace of RDR 2 when it sound
like someone in camp is using a leaf blower. I’m just worried that once my warranty is up the fan will die and it will overheat, or if i ask for a warranty exchange it will be a waste of time and I’ll be told to just ignore the noise.

Xbox One X Fan sounds way louder than usual

Ok I moved it and it has not shut off sense but the Xbox One X Fan noise is not constant and is still loud maybe not as loud as a jet engine like I describe before but still loud way louder than my Xbox One S and OG Xbox One, it would have a fan burst
when I'm playing which is loud and annoying and the fan noise would never be at a constant noise level while I'm playing a game.
