Xbox One X - Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos Video Dropping when connected to ARC input on TV

I have my Xbox connected to my sound bar which supports Dolby Atmos, then I have my sound bar plugged into my TV's HDMI ARC input. When I enable the HDR setting on my TV for the input that the Xbox is on. The video flashes on and off, and sometimes shows
digital static, and after about 1 minute goes black, I can still hear the Xbox menus when I click around on the remote, but no video. If I disable the HDR setting on my TV, the video comes through fine.

I found that if I move my soundbar over to a different HDMI port on my TV, one that is not the Audio Return Channel (ARC), the HDR video comes through fine from the Xbox. But this is not an ideal solution, since then my other devices connected to my TV can't
use the soundbar through the ARC HDMI input.

I am wondering if this is related to this issue:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...on-issue/fd953169-92b2-48d4-9298-a324bb863495

Microsoft Agent: "We have seen issues with the Xbox One X not processing Dolby Vision/HDR 10 with 4K video and Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital at the same time when plugged into an audio receiver or sound bar."

I am wondering if it's related to this handshake issue, when I have my soundbar plugged into the ARC it messes something up with the Xbox. Maybe it's the two-way communication between the soundbar and the TV that the
    Xbox does not like.

    :)

How do i connect my xbox one s to my tv to still get 4k picture but at the same time connect it to my soundbar to get dolby atmos sound

It seems that your TV supports Audio Return Channel (ARC). However, on the TV's specification page I don't see if it supports Dolby Atmos through ARC.

If your TV is capable to send Dolby Atmos via ARC, you'd connect your Xbox to a 4K capable HDMI port OTHER than the HDMI ARC port on your TV.

You will then get 4K resolution on the TV screen, and the TV would "forward" audio via the Audio Return Channel to the sound bar. If supported, this will then be Dolby Atmos.

It seems that the Soundbar doesn't support 4K pass through. So either you would need a new TV that supports Dolby Atmos via ARC, or a new soundbar or AV receiver that supports 4K video.

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for coming to the forums with the issue. We would say yes this is most likely an issue with the handshake. As a sound bar is a third party device, it is hard to try and get all compatible with the Xbox completely. Have you reported the issue as mentioned
in the post you posted? Other than that would stick it out as they have been working on this bug. Is it possible to maybe try a different sound bar receiver see if the issue is still there?

    Thanks,

    Brad

XBOX ONE X Dolby Vision Issue

    Hi DC105,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have seen issues with the Xbox One X not processing Dolby Vision/HDR 10 with 4K video and Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital at the same time when plugged into an audio receiver or sound bar. This has been acknowledge by
the Xbox preview program and I have seen they are working on something.

Do you plug the Xbox directly to the TV via HDMI and then the audio receiver directly to the TV via HDMI ARC or optical cable? Or do you use a simple setup by plugging the Xbox directly to the receiver via HDMI and then the receiver directly to the TV via
    HDMI?

Give us some more details on your connections and maybe if the simpler set up works with both audio and video features.

How do you set up dolby atmos on xbox one without getting this error code 0x80bd0009

I just took a quick look at the user manual for that soundbar, you'd need the Xbox connected to the HDMI in port on the soundbar, that's the HDMI port on the right as you look at the back of your soundbar. Then take an HDMI lead from the other HDMI port
on the soundbar to your Tv's ARC enabled HDMI port if it has one.

This is what the user manual states.

    1. Connect HDMI IN jack on the back of the unit to HDMI OUT jack on the external device such as Blu-ray disc player, DVD player, etc
<<< ( This would in your case be your Xbox HDMI out port ). 2. Connect HDMI OUT (TV ARC) jack on the back of the unit to HDMI IN (ARC) jack on the TV. 3. Set the input source to HDMI IN or OPT/HDMI ARC. Press repeatedly F on the remote control
or F on the unit until the function is selected. - If you select HDMI IN you can hear the sound from the external device. Select it when playing the external device. - If you select OPT/HDMI ARC, you can hear the sound from your TV. Select it when watching
the TV. You can see “DOLBY ATMOS”on the display window if connecting normally between this sound bar and your TV and DOLBY ATMOS contents is played.

Do you see Dolby Atmos on the display of your soundbar at all ? There is no manual way to select Dolby Atmos on your soundbar it seems.

You do have the Dolby Access app on your Xbox ? That allows you to use Dolby Atmos on the Xbox One.

You don't need to pay for that to use home theatre only if you plan on using it for Dolby Atmos on your headphones.

    https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/D12isMWJ+fS.pdf - The Manual

HDMI ARC Does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. They really have to mention that more. The only way to get Dolby Atmos is from a direct connection with something like a Blu-ray player or your computer. If it goes through a tv, it won't support Dolby Atmos.
The manual, use CTRL + F and type atmos to find it, lists what you get with a connection.

HDMI Direct Connection | HDMI ARC
    | Optical |

    LPCM 2.0 | Yes | Yes | Yes |

    LPCM 5.1 | Yes | No | No |

    LPCM 7.1 | Yes | No | No |

    Dolby Digital | Yes | Yes | Yes |

    Dolby TrueHD | Yes | No | No |

    Dolby Digital+ | Yes | Yes | No |

    Dolby Atmos | Yes |Refer Below| No |

    DTS-HD HRA | Yes | No | No |

DTS-HD MA, DTS LBR, DTS: X, and DSD are HDMI Direct Connection only.

Ok, as to why I said refer below for Dolby Atmos on ARC is that there is a difference between Dolby Atmos. So you can encode atmos into either TrueHD or EAC3. If something doesn't support atmos, the system falls back to either TrueHD or EAC3. (TrueHD is
most common in files. HDMI ARC does not support TrueHD + Atmos combo. However, some TVs can support EAC3 + Atmos. So for most files, you'll have TrueHD + Atmos. HDMI ARC will not support TrueHD or Atmos. However, some TVs can support EAC3 + Atmos. However,
you will rarely find this. Your best bet is to directly plug something like your graphics card (atmos must be supported), Blu-ray player or anything that can output Atmos. HDMI ARC is soo confusing to deal with and that's why many people just assume that it
can support atmos. I've heard new software is coming out that may support atmos on arc though.

    Explanation:

Dolby Atmos for Blu-ray & Basically everything else - Direct Connection - NO ARC

Dolby Atmos for streaming (Netflix, Amazon Video) - HDMI ARC is okay!

Conclusion: HDMI ARC is limited right now. You should use a direct connection if you want to fully experience atmos on your programs.

Edit: Steaming sites like netflix use DD+ which is EAC3 + Atmos. So you can use HDMI ARC and watch netflix with atmos but... that's pretty limited.
