Xbox one X, controller can start the console but wont respond afterwards.

My controller starts the xbox, it shows that it's connected and powered on, but I cannot use it at all after starting the console.

I can't use it to log in, I can't even use it to open the dashboard so updating the controller is completely out of the question as it doesn't even show up in that menu. I used the Xbox App Phone controller to go to settings - devices and it just says "connect a device".

I am at a loss as to what to do here.

I would say the only option would be to try to connect this controller on another device - like another console of computer - and see how it goes. If the issue still persists on another device, I would say the controller is faulty. Sorry about that.

I've tried connecting it via micro usb but the problem remains the same.

My other controller works just fine.

I unfortunately cannot test the faulty controller on another console or PC right now.
