    Xbox One won't turn off

So, for the past week or two my Xbox One will sometimes, when holding the controller's guide button and selecting Console Off, will turn the screen black and everything but the console stays on. As does my controller. Both also have flashing Xbox buttons
until I hard reset the console.

Some information that may be useful: the console is in power saving mode. This started only after the clear tile update.

Please, any ideas what is causing this? If it was the update, could a future update fix?

    :)

  2. Xbox One S won't turn off

Hi there Dean, thanks for reaching out.

Have you set your Xbox One S console to automatically apply available console updates when you turn the console off? Also, did you select the option to keep your games & apps up to date automatically in the background? If so, this could be what you're experiencing.

Additionally, if you have an external hard drive actively connected to your Xbox One S console, you may be hearing noise from the external itself.

Thanks for that info. To check, is the humming noise consistent or does it stop after a few moments following a complete power down of your Xbox One S console?

Also, is the console plugged into a wall outlet or power strip?

Are you experiencing any performance issues with the console?

    Xbox One won't turn off

Hey General! Let me ask, about how long have you waited before doing a hard shut down? I did notice after the last update that there was an extended period of time before the console fully powered off. After the console first came out this was a considerable
issue, where the light would flash for 30 seconds to as much as a few minutes before powering down. They resolved that after a few updates, but it seems to be back - just not for quite as long.

As an example, it did it to me the other night, I watched for about 30 seconds, still flashing, I went to the kitchen & fixed a drink, came back and it was off. Couple minutes at most.

Try shutting down and waiting to see how long it takes before it stops flashing, and let us know!

The two times I tried to wait it out went 20+ minutes and had to give up. Far longer than your experience.

I forgot to mention that this issue followed errors that forced me to shut down. Three times I lost connection to Xbox live and was unable to resolve the issue, so I shut down. Each time the console refused to shut down. I reset my router and thought that
was fixed. However, the most recent occurrence followed my game, Destiny, freezing. I went to the dashboard, but then the dashboard itself froze for several minutes before I decided to use the console button to turn off. As before, the console remained on
    and flashing.

Prior to about a week ago, I've never had a similar problem. I do hope you're right and this is somehow linked to the update, and maybe a later patch can fix this.

Yeesh, sorry to hear it, man. I've not yet seen it that bad, so I hope it's not anything that might end up needing a repair. :-( Are you by any chance in the preview program? We should post this over there too, if you are!

No, I'm not in the preview program. I guess I'll give it some time and see what happens...

    Thanks for the help

So I have just lost connection to Xbox Live. This has always been the first sign of the issue. I disconnected my router, but now I can't connect back. The console sees my network, but every time I try it says can't connect. I haven't tried yet, but I have
a feeling that when I turn it off, it will stay on as it has before.

I tried something different. Instead of trying to turn off the usual way, which keeps failing after these odd disconnects, I used the Restart option in settings. Weird thing is, instead of restarting it turned off completely. I waited, but it was off. This
    problem keeps getting weirder...

Oh, and having it back on now, I STILL can't connect. Getting worried now.

I tried turning it off the right way and, amazingly, it did turn off. Once again though it can't connect to my network. It appears that my console is having a different problem than I initially thought. Can't even play online now.

I'll await a response, but for now I'll have my Xbox off and try again later unless I hear ideas before then.

Spoke too soon. Decided to try one more time and it worked! Still, these problems are troubling. I'll put any changes here.

    Xbox One won't turn off

Okay so it seems this isn't an issue with my xbox. These problems appear to be connected to the game Destiny's error code "weasel". Others have experience this same issue in the time period I have where it kicks the user out of xbox live and requires a hard
reset to reconnect. Luckily I've grown tired of Destiny anyway, so I think I'll be okay.

Okay, well, I'm glad you've at least figured out the root of the cause! Weasel is a new one on me, I'm more familiar with Badger or the bird-themed errors, haven't heard of this one!

Do you have the eco mode turned off? The xbox is designed to stay on in low power mode when the console is turned off. You have to go into the power settings and turn on eco mode which will power down the xbox fully when you turn it off.

Sorry to hear it. If your console will not turn off then please hold the power button on it for 10 seconds till the console forces off. This should fix any minor issues with the console
