Xbox one won't store games on external hard drive

My xbox one won't allow me to store games on my seagate expansion 2tb 3.0usb External hard driv. I have gone through all the settings to make sure It is the correct format and that it has a partition. yet it will only allow me to access files that are on
the hard drive and not store xbox things on it. I got the hard drive purely for this reason and others have had no problem with it. What can I do to get it to work?

I store most of my games on an external hard drive, if i replace my Xbox one for newer model, will i need to re-install all games on external hard drive ?

with xbox one out, i don't think a 500 gig hard drive will ever come out. too bad MS won't let 350 have external hard drives like they will let us have on xbox one next month. you can use a thumb drive if it's at least 8 gigs min to store data. you g=can
store DLC for games you don't play as much or store XBLA games you rarely play.

 

Sorry to hear it. Can you try formatting the hard drive on your pc and then connect it to see if that helps?

 

Already have done that and still won't let me store games

 

Ive got the same external as you (only the 3TB model), and all I had to do was to format it through the Xbox One. Its been working like a charm from thereon.

 

Try a reboot press console button for 8 seconds, if you have another usb 3 cable use that and connect to console and reformat, I have the same HDD and sorted it with a new and better cable the HDD are good but the cables are nasty and cheap.

 

I take it the formatting on the Xbox was an automatic thing when you first plugged it in, mine never came up with that, and I have done a reboot and still does the same thing, I will try get a new cable and see if that works

 

When you plug it in if all is well you will be prompted to format, it isn't automatic also try other usb ports.

 

Did you download the external hard drive app to the console?

 

It never prompted to format hard drive it just prompted to download the media player preview app which allows me to view files in my hard drive, I can't find any other app that suggests external storage, and the USB cable has a different connection on the
back of the hard drive, where would I find another one of those cables?

 

Go into settings/system click on manage storage is your external showing there if it is click on it go to format.

If it doesn't show in manage storage plug it into computer/laptop and format plug back into console then do as above

Remember you cannot mix media files with games/apps media files need separate hdd/stick.

 

There is no option on xbox to format it, it only says view files, and I have already formatted it on my PC

 

I have the same problem. The only difference is when I first plugged a hard drive in, it asked me what I wanted to do... Format or play back media.i picked play back media, and now no hard drive gives me the option to format.... Please help ☺

 

iBeech - if you want to use the drive for storage then reformat it on your PC before plugging it back into the console.
