    Xbox One Wont Recognize External Hard Drive to Play Media


    So I bought a 1TB Toshiba Canvio External Hard Drive to play media on my Xbox and when I plug it in , a light comes on the hard drive but nothing happens on the Xbox. It worked on my Xbox 360 fine and the Xbox One plays USB sticks just fine too. Anyone got
    an idea on what the issue could be? I have tried all the basic troubleshooting steps available online

    External Hard drive for media

    I have an external hard drive that I used to play movies. (I use the media player app)

    I also used a flash drive for the same thing.

    since the new update my xbox will no longer acknowledge the media files on my external hard drive. it will recognize that I have another storage device, but wont let me play or even see the files.

    I am still able to use a flash drive to play files but I am wondering why I cant use my EHD.

    any ideas?

    External hard drive problems with media player

    I'm attempting to play music/video files that are stored on my external hard drive with my Xbox one. I downloaded media player, and media player recognizes the hard drive, but media player says there are no files to be found. There are indeed many files
    on there, and many, if not all, are supported file types. How do I solve this?

    That hard drive must be designated as a media drive. Not formatted as Xbox drive. Because Xbox recognizes SSD it immediately recognizes it as a media drive. Here is troubleshot for external
    hard drives.     Have you tried to start movies from USB drive? Remember, in settings on your Xbox that drive must be designated as a media drive. You can try reformated it again on your PC and then plug it in again on Xbox. One other thing. If your HDD is
    recognised as media drive on your Xbox, you can format again on your Xbox and set it as media drive again. System/storage - select your media drive and pres a. Then formate it as media drive again. And finally, the question that supposed to be first. Is your
    HDD recognized as a media drive? Is it recognized at all?

    Have you tried to change USB ports to plug it in? And last, try a power cycle console described here on the bottom of the page and try plug
    back in your HDD.

    I am having trouble with my external hard drive on my xbox one and ever since that new update my xbox one wont recognize that my external hard drive is plugged in I have tried the trouble shooting steps and nothing seems to work and my external hard drive
    is a 3.0 Toshiba external drive is this problem going to be fixed before its released to the general public because I want to play my games that are saved to that drive can anyone tell me if this problem is even being looked into at all

    @GrowlingYapper I own a 4TB external HD that I use to play media off of on my Xbox 360. It was a bit of a pain getting it to recognize it as well as recognize it as a media player which are two totally different things. Do you know if a 4TB would work as
    a media player on an Xbox One. I plan on grabbing a one but want to use my external as a media drive and have no intentions of using it as a stroage for games, etc.

    Yes i have done this. My external hard drive had 80% left of storage. But now it wont connect to my xbox. The hard drive itself has the light on and you can feel it turned on, but the xbox itself wont recognize it.

    Perhaps your child's external hard drive is not working. Is your child's external hard drive recognized by the Xbox One? Does it turn on any lights?
