Xbox one wont recognize external hard drive anymore.

A while back, (6 months maybe), my xbox started displaying an error message "external storage detected but usb signal is too weak, please make sure its the correct type of usb cable"... I had been using the same cable for a year at this point, I tried multiple
different cables with no luck. Then i noticed even with the error message, i could still see and play the games on the external, i just couldn't add anything new. This was going on up until 2 weeks ago, then overnight, my external hard drive stopped showing
me the games that were there and wasn't even displaying the error message. So i went through the trouble shooting process. PC recognizes the hd, i have attempted reformatting, but now my xbox will only recognize the hd as media storage with no option to format.
If i set the hd to default settings, the xbox will display the message, external storage detected", only after i unplug it from the xbox?!?!!? This make no sense and has me so frustrated, I have spent hours looking through xbox forums, searching youtube only
to have people literally say you're SOL. Any feed back at all would be appreciated. I've talked to a few people that have just bought a new external and some of them it fixes the problem, but others they ended up just wasting money because the same thing happens
with the new one, so idk what i should do. I'd love to find a solution , but tbh at this point i just want to know why and how this happened more than fixing it.

Did you try a hard reset already?

Try performing a hard reset EXACTLY like this. Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes.
Plug the power cord back in and restart the console.

If that doesn't work try reformatting the drive on the PC using NTFS. That of course will wipe the drive clean so you will have to download your games again.

the external disk you use is usb 3.0? why is the connection used by the xbox

Yes i have done this. My external hard drive had 80% left of storage. But now it wont connect to my xbox. The hard drive itself has the light on and you can feel it turned on, but the xbox itself wont recognize it.

Thanks for your reply! I did try that out, it does recognize other usb/external hard drives, so I'm thinking the problem is more with this particular hard drive that suddenly isn't being recognized anymore.
