Xbox one wont recognize external hard dirve

I bought a 3tb seagate external hard drive around Christmas and ive been using for 6 months now until a few days ago when my xbox stopped recognizing it

Xbox One will not recognize second external hard drive

Hello All:

I have an xbox one. I have been using two external hard drives with it. Recently the xbox stopped recognizing that the second hard drive was connected. I figured the hard drive quit working, so I purchase a new 4tb Seagate Xbox External Hard Drive to
use. I plugged it in and the xbox did not recognize it either. I have done hard reboots, switch usb ports, switch cables, etc... and nothing that I do gets the xbox to recognize either the original second external hard drive that was working perfectly or
the new second external hard drive. Even when I remove the first external hard drive, and hard reboot, the xbox will still not recognize the either the new external hard drive or the drive that had worked well in the past as a second external hard drive.
I figure something is wrong with my xbox one. Please advise what I should do.

Id also like to say that ive tried different usb ports and power cycling my xbox

 

Seems to me that it is a problem with either the drive itself or the cable connecting the drive to the console.

If you have another external drive handy, try using the cable from your xbox external drive and see if it can connect to a computer or laptop. If it can, then its more than likely a problem with your external drive.

Alternatively, you could test your external drive on another xbox one console.

 

Unfortunately the Seagate externals are notorious for failing on the X1. It's been pretty well documented. You could go through the long process of reformating it and loses it all anyway and then start your installs again only to have it fail again in
the next couple months, or you can save yourself a lot of trouble and replace it.

Western Digital seems to have the best bang for your buck, imo. I picked up a WD MyBook 2TB for $80 from Officemax on sale a while back.

Thanks big Ben and rocky for your help i tried plugging my hard drive into my laptop it gives me the option to format it to my laptop so i don't know its a problem with the USB then, but just in case i bought a new USB cable so if that dosen't work it might
be time to invest in a new hard drive.

Can you please post the model of the Seagate drive you're trying to use with the Xbox?

 

I too am having this issue, i had a preview program update this morning after xbox turned on, it won't find hard drive
