    Xbox One wont detect my external hard drive


    My Xbox one doesn't detect my external hard drive. My brother reformatted it and his Xbox was able to detect it but it still wont show up for me. I tried plugging it into my laptop to see if there was something else wrong with it but it didn't appear on
    there either. I've done everything the support page says to do as well.

    Xbox One wont detect my external hard drive

    Heya!

    So when it comes to hard drives and the Xbox console once they are formatted for the console they are not usable on other devices like a PC, thus why your computer was not able to detect it.

    We can check a few things to ensure your drive is not the issue though:

    1. Are you plugging the drive into the ports in the back of the console?
    2. Is your console plugged into a power strip or surge protector?
    3. Have you
      soft factory reset       the console?
    4. Have you gone through all of the steps for
      troubleshooting external storage      ?

    Is your console an Xbox 360 or Xbox One ?

    Double check if the external hard drive is actually being detected, sometimes the USB connection might be loose. If the external hard drive is not detected, turn off the console

    and then double check the USB connector is firmly plugged in, then turn console back on and see if external hard drive appears.

    Also another thing to check... some brands of external hard drive have a power light when turned on. Check if the power light is on.

    Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with the Xbox console detecting the external hard drive. I recommend to try the following:

    • Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One
    • Try a different port on the Xbox console
    • Try using another cable that connects from your external hard drive to your Xbox console
    • Try a different external hard drive to help isolate the issue between the Xbox or the hard drive

    Give this a try and let us know the results.

    I have this same problem but with an xbox one. Right after the update the external hard drive wasn't being detected. Tried with a brand new drive with the same result.
    Same here, a recent xbox os update broke compatibility with some external hard drives.

    My seagate 5tb media drive stopped being detected by my xbox one s.

    Drive checks out fine on a pc with no issues, however, xbox cannot detect the same drive.

    I purchased a new 5tb WD external drive and after formatting on a pc it was not detected by xbox os also.

    After 2 months of research I eventually fixed the extetnal drive not detected problem.

    I used the Western Digital quick format tool to format the external drive and it finally solved the problem.

    My 5tb media drive is now detected every time and the initial problem seems to be due to an xbox os update and certain partition types on extetnal hard drives.
