So I have a 4k TV is there any picture quality advantages for going for a quality stand alone Blu Ray player, say with 4k upscaling over the Xbox ONE?

Cheers in advance for the help!

IMHO a stand alone Blu-Ray player is always going to do a better job of playing Blu-Rays than a console. As you already own the 3D Blu-ray player what's the issue?

xbox one "will" support 4k blu-rays in the future. They just haven't announced it when it will. So if you buy 4k blu ray movies they will not play yet on the xbox one. as with standard blu rays I find it only noticeable on larger blu ray tvs. I have
a 4k 70in tv, the only way I can currently see blu ray formatted shows is on the built in apps in the tv. Mainly Netflix.

The Xbox One will not support 4K blurays, it not just a case of an update or something, the hardware is different, so Microsoft would need to release some sort of "Xbox 1.5" (which Phil has said isn't going to happen)

However, like Spyderz has said, 4K on a small to medium size TV is overkill, I have a 43inc 4K TV and I cant see the difference between 1080p and 4K.

Also would it be worth getting a Bluray player that can upscale? its up to you really, it will look marginally better (in a similar way upscaled standard def looks marginally better) but you would have to decide if that's something you want to do.

Personally I feel that physical media is starting to die anyway, 90% of all my TV/Film viewing is done over Netflix and Amazon Prime, and both of these services can offer 4K.

  6. I've heard that you need a connection to Live in order to use the blu-ray app on the One. Is this true because if it is going for a standalone player would be the better choice.

  7. No, you do not need to be connected to LIVE in order to use the blu-ray player. However sometimes the player will need an update for which you do need to be connected to LIVE to complete.
