Xbox one tv UK setup

Hello what do I need to watch tv on my Xbox. I have freeview built in to my tv but I don't think this will work. What do I need, and what products do you recommend. Ps I don't want to spend to much. Thanks in advance.

Setup XBox TV Tuner on german Xbox

Hi there, i own a XBox One and the XBox TV Tuner and watch TV via DVB-T in Germany.

I setup my One in englisch (UK) because i prefer playing games in englisch.

Now I got a problem: i can't watch TV via the Tuner anymore, as soon as i want to setup one guide and have to enter my postal code, i get an error message and can only skip the One Guide setup.

After searching for channels i can watch the current channel but as soon as i want to change it or close the TV app for once the screen stays black.

I googled for some time but couldn't find a solution, anyone here got an idea (other than swtiching the console back to german) how i can get that thing to work ?

A significant disappointment.

I am wondering if this is because of the same issue that we in the UK have with using TV due to the Xbox One refresh rates with UK TV.

I don't have an Xbox ONE but I am pretty sure you can't use the freeview built into the tv with the X1.

The only way you can watch tv is if you have a Sky box or a Virgin Media box. In other words, you will need a cable box of some kind, to get it all to work.

@Daft Badger How do you find the whole Xbox ONE experience without using it to control your tv? Quite interested top hear your feedback as I am looking at buying an X1 soon but am a little hesitant to try and teach the rest of the family, its voice controls
just so that they know how to watch the tv!! Was think of skipping the whole tv thing altogether.......

 

Dean, dont worry about the voice controls, they are simple and intuitive, I dont watch TV through my One but use voice to control every other aspect of it. Works brilliantly

 

Yeah,the whole voice control thing works great.

I just don't see the point of having the console on if i'm watching tv,thats why i never hooked my virgin box up to the xbox one.

...yea, you see, I tend to agree as well!! I just know that as soon as I tell the wife, "...yep, you need the X1 on if you want to watch tv", she's gonna look at me like and be like, " .....are you 'aving a laugh - whats the point in that?!!"

Plus also, there will be countless occasions when her and the kids will be home without me and they'll all be shouting at the X1 to turn everything on - and probably getting frustrated when it doesn't work properly! I'm also not a fan of everyone in the
house using my X1 (for tv) when I am not around!!

I guess, leaving out the tv stuff all together would probably solve all the above issues for me.....!!!!

There is one other thing though....... All my equipment is in a tv cabinet (obviously apart fro the tv which sits on top of it!) and that is where I am planning to put the X1 as well. With the Kinect (this will be perched on top of my tv, like my current
gen Kinect is!) needing to obviously have line of sight to the X1, will I need to always keep the cabinet doors open?!

The Kinect power lead exits from the back of the One so you should be able to route it the same as any other cable out the back of the cabinet. The Kinect doesnt need to have sight of the console.

 

1. Xbox will also work with freeview and youview boxes. (if you use BT or TalkTalk you can probably get a free one)

2. You will need the doors open so that the kinect "IR blaster" can control your set top box. However you can get an IR blaster extension cable accessory if you want to keep the cabinet shut.

Thanks for posting about the IR blaster extension link - I never knew they worked with the Xbox One! I do have a question though?! It says to connect the IR blaster extension from the back of the X1 and then attach the other end to the box which you want
to control (it will be my Virgin TiVo which, along with the X1, both will be in the cabinet - the Kinect will sit on top of the tv outside the cabinet).

I still don't understand how the Kinect will blast IR signals to the X1 if the X1 is inside a a cabinet and the TiVo is as well?? Will I need to keep the X1 outside the cabinet, and the TiVo inside the cabinet so that the IR extension cable works?

 

OK. IR blaster is so xbone can control other things so the xbox doesn't need to "see" the ir blaster.

The Kinect is wired to the xbox.

The kinect has a built in IR blaster. This works like your TV remote and uses infra red light to control your TV, set top-box, amp etc. This assumes that you want to use your kinect as a camera and is therefore on top of or under your TV. If your TV and
cable box can "see" the infra-red light coming out of the kinect, then the xbox will be able to work like your remote control.

HOWEVER, if your set top box is out of sight of the signal from your kinect, you can plug in an "off the shelf IR extender" (link below) and place one of the lamps over the sensor on the set top box.

...right, ok I think I got it (sorry for being a little naive!!!)!

I guess, if I don't want to use the extender, I can just make sure that I open the cabinet doors before I say 'Xbox ON' to get the X1 to turn everything on...!!

Btw, having your TV running through your X1 will noticeably increase your electricity bill. I was surprised by how much.

 

As much as I hate to say it...don't bother running your set top box through the XB1.ESPECIALLY if you have kids. You cant access your sky planner (or youview planner) from the oneguide. So the hours of Curious George and Dora the Explorer you have recorded
can only be accessed with the via the set top box. Its basically pointless at the moment. You are running the XB1 (and spending your electricity) for no reason apart from being able to access the home screen! Maybe one guide is more for someone who has access
to their own TV controller (unlike me with a family!!) I am sure one day it will all work lovely. Just seems a bit redundant at the moment.
