Xbox One turns itself on

Hi everyone,

So it seems that my Xbox has a poltergeist within it. A few days ago, I woke up at like half 7 in the morning and just as I was in the process of getting out of bed I heard the Xbox boot up. There was no chime as you would normally get with pressing the
power button and the controller was on my desk powered off so it wasn't as if I had accidentally activated it. Bemused, I switched the TV on and sure enough, the Xbox had booted and was sat idle on the home screen.

While I was at work today, a friend of mine sent me a text asking why I wasn't joining his party and why I was just sat on the home screen. Sure enough, I got in from work a couple of hours later and it was sat there, powered up and on the home screen again.
If the time my friend said he saw me come online is correct, 5 hours had elapsed until I got in from work to turn it off.

Any one have any ideas?

Key Points:

Xbox One is set to Energy-Saving

Smartglass connections set to work only with profiles signed in on the console at that time (although smartglass can't boot the console if it's in energy-saving mode anyway).

One controller, sat on the desk out of reach so no chance of accidental activation

Would especially appreciate an answer from an Xbox Tech as I don't really fancy wasting all that energy. My xbox is set to switch off after 6 hours in case I leave it on for updates etc.

Xbox One turns itself on.

My Xbox One will not stay turned off. I do not have the Kinect plugged in so there's no issue of the Xbox 'hearing' anything. When I have my Xbox One in Energy Saving mode and I turn it off, it turns itself back on. When I have my Xbox One on Instant On
mode and I turn it off, it turns itself back on with a disc read error message:

"Sorry, we can't play this disc. Try an Xbox One game, a music CD, or a movie on Blu-Ray or DVD." Even though I have not put in any disc into the Xbox One.

Hey there,

It's possible the console is performing an update or downloading an update which is why it's turned on, is your console set to Instant On more or Energy Saving mode?

I would recommend the following steps to follow:

Turn off your console completely by holding down the power button for ~5 seconds

Unplug your power supply from the wall and console.

Leave everything unplugged for about 5 minutes

Plug everything back in and turn your console back on

Also you want to make sure that your console is up to date by going to Menu>Settings>System and see if there is an update available.

Completely forgot I posted a thread on the forums about this, sorry. All of the above didn't work, it still does it. Doesn't seem to be a set time either. It did it to me a couple of days ago dead on 6am and it did it just now at 10:50. The only give
away that it's turned on is the disc starting to spin up in the tray. I just don't understand how to stop it short of turning it off at the outlet which is a pig to get at.

Have you tried gently wiping the power button on the front of the console with a clean soft cloth just in case there is some dirt on it.

try to clean the front panel - power and eject areas with damp soft tissue, also make sure it is not close to things that can cause interference, like if console is next cell phone , house phone, audio receiver, etc, make sure it has some distance between
console and other electronics. Also maybe move console and see if the same thing happens. ,

Hey ImWatchinYou69! Is the console plugged directly in to a wall outlet? Are you using Energy-Saver mode or Instant-On? When the console turns on, do you hear the chime from the console as well? Post back and let us know!

Hey there leogaboardi,

That's an interesting problem for sure. Is your console in Instant On mode or Energy Saving mode? It's possible the console is downloading updates so it appears to be on. Is this an Xbox One S console or an original Xbox One console?

My xbox one also turns on at seemingly random times. It did it this morning while I was still in bed and last night while I was on a different floor of the house. No schedule that I can tell. Two changes that happened recently the fall update and I changed
to energy saving setting.

Yep, definitely sounds like a stray signal from something else.

There are now that many devices that have remote control or use wireless signals that it`s entirely possible for one to cause interference with another.
