Xbox One switching itself off and sometimes not switching on

Hi all,

I appreciate that this is a common problem but I have not yet found anyone else describe the exact same issue(s) so was hoping someone may be able to help before I have to really get into it with Microsoft tech support, sending my machine off for repairs
etc.

If I have not used it for a while - a couple of hours or more - my Xbox One will power up. However, with maybe two exceptions over the last week and a half, it will switch itself off after approximately 15 minutes.

Once it has switched off, it is touch and go as to whether I can switch it on again. If I can switch it on, it will stay on for barely a minute.

Sometimes it will switch on / off when I physically press the power button, sometimes only when I power it up using the controller, sometimes neither. I have not been able to identify any pattern to this - for example yesterday it was switching on fine with
the power button, today only occasionally.

The power unit appears to be okay and behaving, i.e. it is showing white and orange lights when it should be.

I have tried most of the obvious and / or recommended stuff:

- The console and power unit are both in a well-ventilated position, and neither feels hot when in use.

- I have tried the various suggestions regarding unplugging it, trying it in a different and lone socket etc (with one exception which I will list below).

- I have fiddled with the settings varying it between energy-saving and instant on etc.

- I have spent about an hour chatting with a friendly and well-meaning but ultimately not very helpful Xbox tech support person (basically they wanted me to send my console in for repair but I was not satisfied they understood the problem, so I hope for
an easier fix).

I have not tried:

- A factory reset and / or using the diagnostic tool. I've experienced the pain of reinstalling stuff from my 360 before so am not keen on doing this if I can avoid it. The Xbox tech support guy said the diagnostic tool "fix everything!" but if I understood
him correctly it will wipe my data. I would be particularly keen to know if anyone has had success with this - my gut feeling is this problem is a software issue.

- I have plugged the console into its own socket but it is still the same pair of sockets it was plugged into before, albeit it was via a multi-socket before, and plugged into the right rather than left socket.

- Returning it to Microsoft for a repair.

- Contacting the company I bought it from to see if they will deal with it.

- Anything that invalidates the warranty.

I don't actually use the console that much - I work full-time and study part-time, meaning I only ever fire it up for a couple of hours a week.

Weirdly, after the first time it switched off about a week ago, I could no longer sign into Xbox Live (I could still sign in on my 360). I managed to sort that by deleting and adding my profile. After I did this was the first time I fiddled with the energy
saving options - it was actually on 'energy saving' and I changed it to 'instant on', and the result was so positive I actually thought that by fluke I'd fixed it. I got about two hours use out of the console with no issues, which was easily the most use I've
had since these problems started. However today it's back to switching off, not switching on etc as described. It's for these reasons my gut tells me it's a software problem but I'm probably completely wrong.

If anyone from Microsoft is reading - really not impressed. This is the third significant problem I've had with one of your consoles since 2007 (red ring on one 360, then another 360 deciding to wipe my hard drive) and for the first time I'm actively considering
switching to a competitor, and I'm already whinging about your product to any of my gaming friends who will listen. I'll save the full scale of my rant for another time and forum however.

Until we see updates rolling out to fix various issues I would recommend doing the following when you run into weird things like this:

1: Push the console power button for 5-10 seconds until I turns off

2: Unplug the power cord from the console - (has to be from the console)

3: Wait 30 seconds

4: Plug back in and power up console with button

Should hopefully be working okay now. If not let us know

I believe you can contact support to cancel your repair order.

 

Did you ever get any feedback on this? From Microsoft or otherwise? I've recently run into the same problem. I also lost my 360 to red ring and a HD frying. Should have switched to PS when the new generation rolled around.
