Xbox One suddenly not working properly

Hi all,

I have an Xbox One and it's worked perfectly since i bought it back in 2016, that is up until recently. My problem is that when I turn the Xbox on, it seems to start up fine, then the screen stays blank. The only progress i can make from this is if I hold down the X button on the controller and it shows the power/restart menu. There is no response on screen if I just press the X button, it only responds to being held down.

I have tried all of the troubleshooting guides I can get my hands on; I've tried holding the power button and eject button until it beeps to start up in low-res mode, but I'm still left with an unresponsive controller menu (see above).

Has anyone come across this before and been able to fix it?

Hi Francia,

I tried your technique a handful of times with no luck, then on the 5th time - voila! Thanks so much for this!!

Do you know what caused it to happen in the first place, as to avoid a potential repeat?

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regard to your concern.

In this case, we just need to reset your console keeping your games and apps through the Xbox Troubleshooter page. Don't worry because as long as you're connected to Xbox Live your saved progress, games, will not be deleted. It will remove all of your accounts but you can add all of them later on.

Make sure to follow the steps accordingly to access it:

"1. Unplug the network cable if you're using a wired network connection.

2. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.

3. Wait 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord back in.

4. Press and hold the Pair button (located on the left side of the console) and the Eject button (located on the front of the console), and then press the Xbox button on the console.

5. Continue holding the Pair and Eject buttons for 10-15 seconds.

6. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart. You can release the Pair and Eject buttons after the second power-up tone."

When the console powers up, you will see the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter. Please click on "Reset this Xbox" then "Reset and keep my games and apps".

And now it's suddenly started working, I'm gonna assume the servers were being overtaxed and couldn't load properly.

Please try performing a hard reset on your console EXACTLY like this. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back
in and restart the console. Once it is back up and operational test the results. Let us know. Good Luck!!
