XBOX ONE Strange fan noise

Hello all.

I'm quite aware that there's multiple threads on the issue, but most youtube examples given don't seem to fit the bill quite well. My XBOX ONE, which I just received today, makes the most annoying noise when its 'idling'. (When no commands are being given,
so to speak.)

I didn't notice it during the set-up and Day One Patch thing, but afterwards it really started to be heard. The weird part of this is: the XBOX ONE works fine, is noiseless when its busy, but when I stop doing anything and just let it sit in the menu, the noise
starts. In fact, if I don't press any controller button for a second, the fan starts whirring and hitting something(I guess.) I don't even own any games for it yet, so I haven't been able to try if the noise persists when running something. Also unable to
find any demo's up for download on the marketplace to test this.

Now, whats the best course of action? Return it to the store where I bought it, or get a replacement from Microsoft? Just asking here because I'm not quite sure. The last time I had an issue was with the RROD on my 360, and I got that replaced just fine (by
MS.)

TL;DR: XB1 fan starts making mild but intensely annoying sound when the console isn't being given anything to do.

Console noise

My new Xbox one makes a strange noise when running, it sounds like a fan issue. I have compared it to a friends Xbox one and theirs is a lot quieter and doesn't produce the same noise mine does. Please see attached
video link . Could anybody help diagnose this sound?

 

In addition, I've noticed that the noise continues when the console is switched off, albeit in reduced form.

 

Could it, in fact, be the hard-drive? Because its silent while gaming/watching clips, starts making the noise when I don't do anything and its in the menu.

 

More searching around has lead me to believe that its the HDD which is very noisy. Why does this only happen on the dashboard and not when running games or loading things?!?! I'd really like some insights here.

 

BUMP, I don't want to spam the forums but my research into what is wrong with the thing needs some help! Is there any way I can fix this and avoid replacing it (and waiting a while in the process)?

again is this a kinnectless model ? my cousin purchased a x1 without kinnect and once you do teh update the noise happens and I know from experience its not the hdd it seems to be some power regualtor issue as it goes away after you start a game.

He sent it back and got another and same thing happens after update and its annoying as hell.

 

Same issue here. Didn`t have this problem with my kinect model.

 

I put mine in the mail for the retour today. It is a kinectless model, yeah.

I'm generally quite pleased with the console (got the chance to test it out a bit) but the noise is just annoying as hell.

Just opened your youtube video, no question it's defective.

I hope you are getting the retailer to replace it asap. From reading posts on here MS returns can take a LONG time.

 

I think I will ship my console to Microsoft. No point in getting my retailer to replace it in order to get another defective one.

 

I just received a new XBOX ONE from a different shop. Waiting for my money back from the previous one.

No noise issues this time. So much for the Microsoft helpdesk people who claimed that it was normal.

Always got to fend for yourself with these issues

The people at Xbox support are sometimes complete ***. My Xbox is going to Microsoft later this week so they can repair it.
