Xbox One still has DRM.

Unless the OP has absolute proof that DRM is involved, he/she is wrong...even If I am wrong and there is DRM, unless it is proven one way or the other, I am not going to go on and on making false statements either way...I would hope the military still teaches
soldiers to stay "level headed and calm" under fire....

 

Why must the OP prove DRM when the other side of the argument must not prove to the contrary.

He is experiencing something that acts like DRM. Is it really that difficult to consider that it may be?

I don't own a One. I can't say One way or the other from person experience. I am however willing to entertain the possibility.

 

I might even entertain the possibility...but I won't state it as FACT, without proof. Nor would I throw around "bricked console" if it is fully operational (except the ability to only play one game)...

 

At the end of the day, The Xb1 is too big to carry around for most people anyway.

Burnin TODI, I couldn't play Powerstar offline, it was the month it was on GWG. Even though I'd bought the game last November it was completely locked, annoying to say the least.

 

I will try it off line in the next day or two and see if I still can offline...I remember having to close out several boxes asking me to connect for stats, etc. before being able to swing...

 

It isn't 100% fact that this is a form of DRM. yet neither is it 100% fact that it is not.

The fact TODI that you are willing to entertain the possibility either way is more than most are willing to do. You at least have an open mind.

Sunset Overdrive is the first game we've had this type of thing reported. I guess we'll have to see if anything games in the future have the same issue.

 

Maybe it isn`t DRM, but it sure acts like it. My system is bricked due to the lack of online connectivity, when I was told by Microsoft it shouldn`t happen.

 

Make no mistake...it is Digital Rights Management.

With the 360 if your console got banned off Live you could always get the O.S. update from U.S.B. or from a newer game, thus you could always play ANY game (Though not online.). With the way it's set up now you NEED to go online to get O.S. updates, thus
if you are "naughty" and get your console banned you can only play games that the O.S. is equipped for. Pure genius on Microsoft's part if you ask me, because not only does it render the offenders console pretty much useless, it makes people buying secondhand
consoles wary of getting burned.

D.R.M. is alive and well on the new system...maybe not a 24 hour check-in, but I would bet the O.P. hasn't had the console very long before realizing playing "new" games is impossible without going online. Discs are fairly useless now (Except for saving
on bandwidth.) as they all require a patch.

On a side note, it didn't take Activision very long to brick the SharePlay (P.S.4) feature for the new C.O.D..

D.R.M. is here to stay in many forms and it's only going to get worse! ;-) While I and most might not be inconvenienced (To much anyway. Lol.), there are those like the O.P. who will be; and it's kind of sad that the innocent must pay for the misdeeds of
others (People who mod consoles/pirates) and the greedy (Insert company name here).

That D33dles is the worst part of DRM. It only ever affects the people who pay.

Remember those anti-piracy ads you couldn't skip on DVDs, pirates never saw them. Only people who bought genuine DVDs had to watch adverts about not to pirate movies.

Those scummy........devils who pirate their games were never going to pay for them anyway.

So D33dles, logically if the offenders hack the XB1 then getting an OS update offline would hardly be rocket science. That is not pure genius, this is part of life and eventually will happen regardless on how tough microsoft wish to be.

 

Well Microsoft were upfront about the X1 being an online console. If the compromise has caused a few to be inconvenienced then you have to work around that. Military Base or Antartic Research Station.

 

But if you can download the updates on a USB drive and update your console that way, then how does that make it DRM? It's a bummer that the update wasn't on the game disc, maybe it was overlooked, or because they're doing monthly updates instead of every
6 months played a part, but I still don't see how this is anywhere close to being DRM.

I mean, my cell phone had to do an update before I could get proper LTE support, does the mean it's DRM? I work for a WISP and we have to update our customer radios from time to time so they'll work with new access points we're replacing old ones with, is
that DRM? No, it's a software update.

Now, half the games on my cell phone won't work unless it is connected to a data network, that is DRM. That is a big difference.

This isn't about access control, or copy management, it is that the new game won't work with the old software. The OP already said that someone was going to send him a USB drive with the update and will resolve the issue, just a bummer that he can't enjoy
Sunset Overdrive until then.

 

I think it's a safe bet that most people can't code...

Let's say "Little Joey" buys a modded console off eBay, where is he going to get the "updates" to keep playing said console when the O.S. keeps changing?

You are right people will find a way to mod/tinker/hack/reverse engineer the X1...but is the time and effort going to be worth it? ;-)

Still think it's a genius idea from Microsoft...not foolproof by no means.

How many times do I have to say it? You can`t download the updates on a USB drive and install them. Microsoft doesn`t provide us with that option.
