@Enen: ??? People define things differently. The general consensus is that shmups are the old-school style games. Sorry if you were confused. FPS games are the Call of Duty style. Skyrim is not a shooter, because it is a role-playing game. That is
how MS categorizes it, not me.

Threads like this is why I have so little hope for the Xbox to be anything other than the FPS console.

Destiny is a next gen Shmup? Now I've heard it all.

    Xbox One Shmups??

Seems to me the OP was just asking about " new" games in that old school style not re hashed old games. I'm sure there will be something released that will suit him. I think right now the only thing in that vein right now is sixty second shooter prime.

  5. Oh, okay. I'm familiar with Gladius and had Sky Shark on the old Nintendo. There was also a popular old western on there too and as you already know, plenty on the Xbox 360. I've always referred to those type of games as "top-down shooters" or " "side-scroller
    shooters."

If you'd like, someone's made a variation on that old Atari space shooter on Project Spark (the name escapes me right now) as well as a recreation of Geometry Wars.

  7. Big shmup fan here tbh, I don't think it would be a financial burden to release existing shooters that are already programmed for x86 platforms. In the gaming world you have your niche groups that tend to sell certain genre's quite well. I have no doubt
that a decent shmup library would be attractive to many.

It's very easy to say we don't like what we can't get. We can get destiny, It is certainly not a shmup, it's an FPS that hit the second hand shelves faster then COD Ghosts.

    Xbox One Shmups??

If Microsoft could just continue what they've done with the 360 - I'd buy an XBox One tomorrow. I just didn't know if there are already some shmups on XBox Live for the One yet. A while back, I read about 3 new titles coming, but haven't heard anything
    else. See link below:

I was under the impression that Natsuki Chronicle and Raiden V were going to be Japanese releases but region free.

Which to me means..... in Japanese, on disc and you would need to import them much like the Japanese games on the 360. There was a couple mom and pop shops near me that sold imports but went out of business long ago.....I'd hate to pay Ebay prices for them.

I'm sure many games of the sort you are are looking for will be released over time. I remember enjoying aegis wing very much on the 360. That is a good example of a old school shoot em up that is" newer". I know it came out years ago but definitely worthy
of a sequel. I use the word newer cause its a lot more rescent than gradius. One of my old school favs was Zaxon in the arcades

@Randver: Even if it means importing, the games are almost always worth it. I imported the Cave shooters, and they weren't terribly expensive. I consider the cost vs. enjoyment of the game above all, and the games don't really lose their value. Yes,
some eBay prices are ridiculous, but there are some good deals if you're patient.

@JPep715: I sincerely hope the games keep coming. The shmup genre may be old, but it never gets old. Time will tell, I guess. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for new material. I really want an excuse to cave in and buy an XBox One, but if it has
no quality shmups, I may just have to pass.

  12. ^ your previous previous post. The original XB and the 360 had a diverse group of games, this was a plus in both cases. If we're just looking at North American titles then the future is bleak. But I don't think MS will do this, then again, they haven't really
followed suit with the other 2 yet in any way shape or form.

@Ben unfortunately either developers don't share your confidence, or shmups have evolved and you preference hasn't (according to Wiki space invades is a shmup, some might argue Destiny is a current one).

    Give Us Decent SHMUPS!

Well to be fair how long did it take "Deathsmiles 2" to appear on the XBox 360?

I suppose if I try and keep things in perspective as the player base and popularity of the machine grows... then this may bring in a wider and more diverse genre of titles to the Xbox ONE.

Also the list of SHMUPs above there are pretty much all that are available for the West... but represent only a small percentage of the SHMUP catalogue that actually existed for their entire SHMUP catalogue.

Japanese Gamers eat up SHMUPs like fanatics but games like "Ginga Force", "Kesui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra", "Mamorukun Curse" and "Radirgy Noa Massive" (again to name only a fraction) were only released in Japan and region locked.

I suppose we may be stuck having top wait on the Future but hopefully it won't be too long a wait.

We're already seeing the biggest and most popular Manga/Anime titles like "Dragon Ball Z", "Naruto", "One Piece" and "Attack On Titan" make it to the XBox ONE.

Hopefully quality SHMUPs aren't too far behind.

    Xbox One Shmups??

@Enen: I don't define genres, but it is generally understood that FPS games are Call of Duty type titles. Skyrim is a role-playing game, different. Shmups are usually understood to be vertical or horizontal scrolling games, like the Raiden series. Different
    concepts.
