    Xbox One Settings will not format external HDDs for Games & Apps


    Hello, I'm using a Xbox One with the latest software updates & have factory restored it recently.

    In Settings > System > Manage Storage, external drives are listed but cannot be formatted. Either the drive

    1. only has the "View Contents" option, or
    2. shows the Format option, but does not format the drive after completing the wizard.
    This was tested with two drives; a
    WD Passport    , as well as
    this enclosure     housing a 500GB SSD. Both meet the requirements for game & app storage, and the WD Passport has worked with the Xb1 in the past, and are connected directly to the console with USB 3.0 cables.

    Hey there Captain!

    Have you tried formatting the external HDD through System settings? Follow these steps below to try that:

    • Verify that the external HDD is plugged into the side USB 3.0 port.
    • Press the Menu button on your Xbox One controller and select 'Settings'.
    • In the Settings menu, select 'System'.
    • Select 'Manage storage'.
    • Within this menu, you should see your external HDD pop up and format it to store Xbox One games and apps.

    Xbox one external storage wont format for game/apps

    hi i'm having the same issue it will not format at all nothing happens just a green circle comes up on the screen i left it for hours for it to format and nothing i unplug it plug it back in again says music pictures and videos??

    have you tried hard resetting the xbox or factory defaulting it and THEN tried to format them? factory defaulting is obviously the last option that u should resort to.

    before that just try to power on the box without those Harddrives connected and then connect one and try to format it then afterwards if that works try to connect the second one and repeat.

    AFAIK, game dvr saves are stored in the reserved part of the internal HDD. That internal storage space is limited so to allow extended clips the option to use an external HDD was added however it can only be used with an NTFS formatted HDD. An NTFS formatted
    HDD cannot however be used to save games and apps which need an Xbox format so you will need to chose between the two usage cases or add a second external HDD if you wish to have both external games/apps storage and game dvr clips.

    1. For Games and Apps

    2. For Movies and Music.
