  1. Xbox One S SSD External Hard Drive - not being able to even use it.

So I have a Seagate 1TB external hard drive. It worked for about a month after I got it, but suddenly I couldn't access it, blocking me from playing all of the games I had on it. I had to move everything back to Internal Storage, which you will know I
cannot hold all of the games I want direct access to at one time. I have tried all methods of restarting the xbox - hard cycle, restart, etc. When I connect it, it asks the usual hard drive setup - do I want to format, do I want to set this storage device
as the default storage location, etc. I click yes to all of these things and then it just doesn't do anything afterwards. The light on the external hard drive flashes, so I don't know if this means it just takes time to format or something? My point is, is
that it takes me through the normal process of setting up an external storage location. But after clicking all of the settings I want, nothing happens. I have tried other USB ports and its the same issue. I know many of you will have had the same issue, but
please comment if you have any tips on WHY nothing is happening after I set it up, and how you fixed it. Thank you!

    :)

The new expansion card for Xbox Series X

    Hi,

Current external hard drives are USB 3.0 5,400 RPM mechanical hard drives. These drives are very slow compared to the Expansion card. You won't be able to run Series X/S games from current external hard drives, not even the 2.5" external SSD drives either.
But, you will be able to archive your Series X/S games to these drives to save downloading again.

The expansion card can run all compatible Xbox games. Which will be Series X/S, Xbox One and the BC Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on the BC list.

Xbox One and other Backwards compatible games will load a lot faster on either the internal storage or the expansion card than they would if you ran them off your external hard drive.

Microsoft has a video on YouTube showing 'The Outer Worlds' loading in just 11 seconds on a Series X/S SSD, compared to nearly 60 seconds on Xbox One.

    External storage

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

To use an external hard drive with Xbox One it needs to be USB 3.0 and at least 128Gb. Theoretically and technically SSDs are faster but I can't tell you if on Xbox One you would feel any difference in loading time. I never had an external SSD with the console to check this.

And on Xbox One, S and X you will be able to install games on the external hard drive and play without having to move to the console's internal memory.

I think a 4TB hard drive already stores a lot of content.

I see. So how would i be able to transfer everything i have on my old hard drive to the new expansion card?

When will we be able to play xbox series X/S games from a external drive?

It would just like to add that Series X|S games are developed to only use faster storage. Not only is this storage totally different to a mechanical hard drive, the way games are loaded is also different. In addition, the Xbox Series X|S hardware can leverage additional resources to load to games from internal SSD or external SSD's even faster, what Microsoft calls its Xbox 'Velocity Architecture'.

As previously stated, you're never going to be able load your Xbox Series X games from an external hard drive. They're just too slow.

Playing XB Series Exclusives on External SSD

So no upcoming X/S exclusive games will be able to play off an external SSD? Even an official Xbox external SSD?
