XBOX One S Pre-Purchase (Upgrade from Day One Edition actually) Concern.....

Howdy Everyone,

I currently have a Day One Edition of the XBOX One that I am very happy with. However, we are about to upgrade our TV/Receiver to a new 4K/HDR capable setup (yay!), and am considering getting the XBOX One S as our 4K UHD Blu-Ray player. However, I have
read on a few other sites that the XBOX One S does not support the pass-through of the 4K object-based audio streams (Dolby Atmos and DTS:X), that it instead down-samples to standard Dolby Digital and DTS. I assume this is true information based on seeing
it at numerous sites, but my question revolves around the possible update to provide the necessary pass-through. Does Microsoft plan on updating the system to support this? Also, I have read numerous posts about 4K Blu-Ray playback issues, where discs either
glitch, or just don't work. Is this issue also going to get fixed, or will I be better off just biting the bullet and buying a stand-alone 4K Blu-Ray player instead of the XBOX One S?

Points for purchases

Unless there is a specific promotion running (such as the Upgrade to Xbox One S, or physical disc pre-order from microsoftstore.com in the US) we are NOT rewarded for making hardware or physical disc purchases.

The staff can confirm if you qualified for the One S upgrade, other than that unless the games you purchased were hard-copy pre-orders from microsoftstore.com, and you live in the USA, then those will not count toward MyVip/Rewards.

Anyone else Pre-order their Xbox One Day One Edition at BestBuy for instore pick up? If yes do you think they will actually have enough units on release day?

Hi, pretty much all that you stated is true, I would imagine that Microsoft would at some point address all the points you mention but they may not of course.

The Blu-Ray player app is of course updatable so the issues with certain media not playing should be a relatively easy fix, the Dolby Atmos/DTS:X support maybe not so easy.

Is it worth purchasing a dedicated UHD player ? that's a good question, they are very expensive at the moment, will you be buying lots of UHD discs or will it be a case of oh look how cool this is and then in six months it sits gathering dust in a corner.

The Xbox One S on the other hand is of course so much more than just a dedicated disc player.

The choice of course is yours, on a personal level I would punt for the Xbox, it's early days yet regarding UHD on the Xbox and things will improve and of course Sony will soon be releasing their 4K enabled PlayStation 4 which may well be a better option
than a dedicated player too.

I pre-ordered both consoles through Amazon.

If you order through Amazon, they have launch day bundles for the PS4 that are still available for pre-order. Since Sony has not given an official release date, my shipping date is 31DEC. However, the launch day edition (no bundle) is unavailable for pre-order.
If you pre-order the standard edition (not launch edition), you MIGHT get an email later on that says Amazon upgraded your standard edition to launch day edition, guaranteeing you will receive yours on that day. This also applies to the Xbox One, which is
what happened to me. I pre-ordered Xbox One on 15JUN, then I received an email six days laters that said Amazon upgraded my pre-order to launch day. Keep in mind, there is only one bundle for the Xbox One, so I would do it fast.

A lot of those diagrams indicate pre-orders for the Xbox One Day One Edition & may not reflect the actual pre-order sales of ALL Xbox One pre-orders. Just my 2 cents...

The same thing happened with me with Forza Horizon 4. I actually pre-ordered and pre-purchased the physical edition quite a while before it came out, and it ended up releasing on game pass on day one
