Xbox One S not recognizing full 4K capabilities through 4K AV receiver

    Hi all,

I just got my Xbox One S yesterday. I was excited to hook it up to my brand new 4K TV (Samsung KS9000), only to find that the system gave me a bunch of “Your TV setup doesn’t support…” messages on the 4K Details screen when connected via my 4K AV receiver
    (Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050).

Both the TV and the receiver support the full gamut of 4K capabilities listed on that Xbox screen, but it only detects EVERYTHING when I’m connected directly to my TV. My receiver is in Direct (pass through) mode, and it definitely supports 4K at 60,
50, and 24 Hz, but those modes are all disabled on the Xbox when I connect to the receiver, leaving me with only HDR movies and gaming.

I’d prefer not to have to connect to my TV directly as I’d be cutting out the possibility of TrueHD/DTS sound from Blu-rays.

Is anyone else running into this issue? Have any advice?

    Thanks!

    :)

hi there...terratogen, thanks for the mode settings, works for me, but do you have a problem with the xbox loosing signal at startup using throughput? i would hate not being able to utilize this feature....

    thanks...joe

Never mind, swapping the HDMI ports did the trick and switching the receiver to mode 1.

This is most likely caused by the receiver. What video mode is your receiver in? On a Yamaha I believe it must be in Mode 1. Pure Direct is not what you are looking for.

Power off the receiver. Press and hold the straight button and turn the receiver back on. When the menu comes up toggle right until you get to 4K mode. If not in Mode 1 toggle it on. Power off the receiver, then power everything back up and check your 4K
    status on the xbox again.

    Hope this helps.

Wow! That worked! Such an easy fix, too... Thanks a lot!

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the two modes? And why is it so hidden?

  6. Your welcome, glad I could save you some frustration.

Many, if not all, of the 4K compliant receivers are by default set at 4.2.0 chroma (Mode 2). The Xbox wants 4.4.4 chroma (Mode 1). The change I had you make just flips the video mode from one to the other. The process varies slightly from manufacturer to
manufacturer (doing so on my Pioneer Elite is similar) but the gist is the same.

One of the reasons that it's "hidden" is to help ensure that someone doesn't enable it by accident when using a tv or devices that can't accept a 4K/60@4.4.4 signal. I'm sure there's other more technical reasons, but you'd have to talk to Yamaha's engineers.

Enjoy the Xbox. I also have a KS9000 and watched Sicario on UHD Blu Ray after setting up the Xbox last night. The movie itself was a little on the slow side, but the picture was fantastic!

Would you happen to have any idea how to do this on an Onkyo HT-R693? I have been looking for the past 15 or so minutes with no luck so far. I will keep looking though.

I am not very familiar with this receiver, but I believe it only has a limited 4K passthrough capability and no 4:4:4 support. It also lacks HDMI 2.0a and thus cannot pass an HDR signal.

You would be best served by connecting your Xbox directly to your television via HDMI and using optical to the receiver for Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound.

Not the best situation and probably not the answer you are hoping for, but this should at least get you up and running.

My TV doesn't support HDR at all but it is 4k capable. I have tried having the XBOX One S directly connected to the TV and through the receiver with no luck getting anything 4k out of the One S.

  11. woza55 - I've never spent any time with that receiver (I don't believe I have ever seen one in the US), however a quick check shows that it is fully compliant.

If it is anything like the US models however there are issues with 4:4:4 if you use the receiver's OSD. Disable that and it should allow passthrough oif the signal.

Also, make sure you are connected to the receiver via HDMI 3, 4, or 5. Also make sure that the HDMI running from your receiver to the television can support 4K. Remember that everything in the chain must fully support 4K and/or HDR.

  12. Firebird3776 - what television do you have? Does the One S show that 4K is supported in the display test when directly connected?

Xbox One S not recognizing full 4K capabilities through 4K AV receiver

I have a Hisense 65" K680 TV, which is a 2014 model. It doesn't support 60Hz or HDR but does support 4k at 50Hz, 30Hz, and 24Hz, which I have checked along with 4k in the Advanced Settings. Whether directly connected to the TV or through the receiver, it
doesn't pass setting it to UHD for the resolution but it doesn't appear that the XBOX One S even sends out a 4k signal to the TV. Between a Roku 4 and Zidoo X6 Pro Android box, both of them display 4k just fine directly connected and through the receiver.

The Hisense TV doesn't have a way to set the resolution of the input because the TV detects the signal being sent out by the source and adjusts to what it needs to display. When I change the resolution on the Roku 4 from 1080p to 4k, the TV flickers and
then changes the resolution to 4k and the same applies with the Android box. However, the XBOX One S doesn't seem to do this. I have tried a 4k video file on all 3 but the XBOX One S is the only thing that won't play it. I don't have a UHD Blu-Ray to try
and don't have another 4k TV to try it on. Netflix, Prime Video, and Vudu show no 4k content through my One S but I can see and watch those through the Roku 4 without any issues.

I was curious about the receiver thing to see if maybe there was something else I could try to at least get the One S to play Netflix, Prime Video, and Vudu on the 4k TV so I could keep the Roku 4 in the bedroom on the 1080p TV in there.

  14. I would have said that the problem is almost certainly a lack of HDCP 2.2 in your television but the fact that you say your Roku will display this content kind of weirds me out. I still lean towards that being the problem and if so would suggest an HDCP
stripper. The problem is that those strippers can be kind of pricey (mine cost around $250 USD) and that I don't have significant confidence that this will resolve the issue. I'm sorry I wish I had a better answer.

I have looked up a few cheap alternatives to HDCP strippers. The HDFury is quite pricey, especially for something that may not solve the issue. From all of what I have read though. Their products do include and offer a lot more than just the generic HDMI
splitter that strips out HDCP. Do you have an HDFury? The Linker seems like it would do everything I need it to and then some, but it's $200. Xbox One S not recognizing full 4K capabilities through 4K AV receiver :p This splitter is what I am going to try for now, as it seems to strip HDCP and the price is right as an expense
    to try it. www.amazon.com/.../ref=ox_sc_act_title_1
