    Xbox One S not reading discs


    I have a Xbox One S that I purchased used from a private seller back in March. It has been working fine up until recently. It doe not get heavy usage. Recently it has not been readings discs being present in the machine. I am having to do a hard power
    cycle. I am wondering where the issue lies. The discs are clean. I do own two dogs. The Xbox is above their level, but the surface does get dusty. If it ends up being an issue with the laser, are there aftermarket parts available?

    Hey Ben thanks for taking the time to bring this issue to us!

    We suggest, if it hasn't already been done, to check out our
    How to troubleshoot problems playing a disc on your Xbox One     troubleshooter page on our website. Now if that doesn't work then
    the problem might be on the actual OS of the console so we would suggest a

    Soft Factory Reset     (while keeping games and apps) IF AND ONLY IF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA IS MET:

    • There is a stable network connection.
    • The information for all profiles is known (email and passwords)
    Once the setup is complete it will ask if we want to keep settings or manual setup lets do manual setup. Give it a shot and let us know of any changes!

    I checked out the troubleshooting page prior to posting. It seems to work if I do step 4. But I am having to do it just about every time now.

    Hi Ben,

    I assume the step you're referring to is on the first link provided about troubleshooting disc reading problems and that is a hard reset and power cycle. If you are having to do it every time now, then I suggest to try a

    soft factory reset     as mentioned above by Nestor. Make sure the criteria is met also as mentioned by Nestor as well.

    Try out the factory reset and let us know the results.

    I finally got around to do the soft factory reset. A disc worked once for the main profile but now I have to do the hard reset. Prior to posting the issue I already made sure the power mode was energy saving, not instant on.

    My device is out of warranty. So 2 questions. 1) Where does the issue lie? 2) are there parts available to conduct my own repair?

    Hello!

    Microsoft does not sale internal components for their products you may want to look into 3rd party websites if that is something you are interested in doing. It does sound as though the Optical Disc Drive on the console may be malfunctioning. You may still
    have some out of warranty options Getting your Xbox console or Kinect sensor serviced.

    Simple Enquiry...

    Xbox One discs are Dual Layer BD-ROM discs 50 GB, which is pretty much standard now. In addition, the One S and the One X can also read UHD Blu-ray feature film discs. Neither the One S or One X can read BDXL discs, I don't know enough about the hardware
    to say for sure if this is due to a hardware or software issue. Note that despite the similar storage capabilities, UHD Movie Blu-ray discs are factory pressed, while BDXL is a writable format largely for burning discs with a PC.

    Despite the One S and the One X's ability to read UHD discs, they will not be used for Game media.

    Depends on the read speed of the Blu-ray drive. I did some research on Wikipedia and PS4's Blu-ray drive and found this...

    M hasn't released officially any specific info of the read speed for Xbox One of it's Blu-ray drive. Maybe it will also depend on the read speed of Xbox One's HDD? Whether it will be a 5400rpm or 7200rpm. I think both digital and disc should be around the
    same for loading times, since games from disc have to be installed for Xbox One just like digital downloads will also be installed onto the HDD.

    So I've tried the disc again on the original one, pulling out my external drive and copying the game onto my xbox one s. I then put the disc inside the original one and it started installing. I'm not sure if the one s is just not supposed

    5 xbox ones & about 11 xbox 360's over the years.

    Xbox ones were all disc reading issues,xbox 360's were different things.Only ever got the red ring once though.
