Xbox One S microphone icon stuck on mute

At the beginning of June this year I noticed my Kotion Each G1000 headset and xbox headset adapter was no longer producing sound. A week earlier i was playing Sea of Thieves with my brother having no problem with chat.

I began to troubleshoot on my own... the headset was working when plugged into my phone (producing sound through the speakers). A different controller did not solve the problem. Plugging the headset directly into the controller using a 3.5 mm jack did not
work. Power cycling the xbox did not work. I noticed that even when no adapter or headset was plugged into the controller there was still a mute icon in the top right corner of the home screen.

I went the route of using xbox chat support next. We went through all of those steps again and then did a soft restore (keeping all my games downloaded). We then did the full restore to factory settings. After the restore before any other hardware was plugged
into the xbox other than the controller, the mute icon was still present and chat functionality was not available.

Support told me this was the fault of the third party headset and that all third party headsets were presenting with this same problem. I highly doubt that otherwise there would be a much bigger problem for microsoft as I would guess a safe estimate for
third party headset use is around 50%. It also seems to me that its hard to blame the headset when i can restore the system to factory settings and not have the headset plugged in and the mute icon is still present.

Anyone else having a similar issue? Anyone else have any success getting microsoft to work on their hardware at no cost? $180 for a console servicing is halfway there to getting me a playstation and off microsoft altogether. I’d much prefer to stay with
microsoft.

At the xbox store we worked through the different potential hardware issues and it turns out a new controller was the fix. Very odd that the controller was working completely fine with a headset for a long time and with no known damage would only lose
chat capability through both the 3.5 mm jack and adapter capabilities. The second controller I was troubleshooting with was old and required the adapter. The guy at the store told me they don’t even sell the adapters anymore and mine was not working for any
controller. Im happy it wasnt the xbox but am disappointed the controller seemed to stop working out of nowhere.

Just restart your console

I tried power cycling the xbox and also went two steps further to restore it to factory settings.

I had issue today of Muted mic icon and only a Full shutdown from Settings>Power and startup>Turn off>Full shutdown resolved it. I also removed power cable for 30secs after shutdown was completed.

It's a strange issue as normally I get Headset and mic icon NOT muted mic icon.

Thank you for clarifying the restart. I tried the full shutdown and power cable removal and neither worked for me. I'm going to try going to the Microsoft store today and see if we can get some extra hardware troubleshooting options. If you have any other
suggestions let me know, I just confirmed again on my laptop that the headset is fully operational.

Also if you look through this previous forum post it seems like it could be an xbox one s issue since the headphones worked fine on the regular xbox one.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the wired version for updating the firmware. Still stuck on mute.
