Xbox One S - Forced & unwanted game updates

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regard to your concern.

Just a friendly reminder though that turning off the settings mentioned means they will not update manually this does not mean that it will stop updates for games even it it’s required.

If an update is required there is no option for us to expedite the process. We need to update the game.

as per the licence agreements, if you start a game and there is an update then it will update or it will not be able to connect to its servers, when the dev/publisher does a server update then your game needs to update, also they fix bugs or add features. if you do not want the update then you would need to set your console to offline mode.

Don't forget you only own a licence to play the game and do not own the game, if they deem it requires an update then they can make it a forced update unless you disconnect from the net. this is virtually the same for all consoles and even pc.

In short if you want to start a game without it updating then you will have to be offline, if a game does not update then you will not be able to connect to the online servers for that game also, same goes for single player games you would need to be offline.

And if there is a system update then this also has to be done or your console will not be able to connect until done.

Gaming is more of a service these days, long gone are the days of being able to shut off a console and unplug and being able to turn on whenever without updates.

Hi, please assist on the following case.

Currently I have a Xbox one S.

Version number: 10.0.22000.4158

Under Settings > System > Updates, I have turned off the options:

Keep my console up-to-date;

Keep my games and apps up-to-date;

Both turned off. When I'm done with the Xbox One S, I use the following method to shut down:

Hold Xbox logo on the controller > Shutdown Console > Afterwards I disconnect power from the console.

On to my issue. As I mentioned before I have turned off both updates, however when I turn on the Xbox I still receive updates from my games.

I would like to receive a solution to this issue. As to why I don't want to update the games, is not relevant. I want to be able to start a game, without being forced to update and wait for several hours.

Please let me know if there is any further information you need. I look forward to receiving a professional feedback.

You have no choice, if you want to play a game and there is an update for it, you have to update the game, no questions asked.

Also you say "As to why I don't want to update the games is not relevant" it kind of is, why don't you want to update a game?

Also you do know that if you left the "Keep my console up to date and the keep my games up to date" switched on, it would download the updates overnight (or at least can, it depends when the update is released)

Finally, if you really don't want to update games, then your only option would be to go over to PC gaming, the only time you ever are forced to update a game is if it connects to an online server (like pretty much all Ubisoft games). All console manufacturers will force you to update a game, no matter what.

The Xbox One OS updates usually roll out in waves, you will sometimes be given the option to update the OS for a day or two before being forced to update, but updates roll out to all versions of the Xbox One (original Xbox One, S and X) at the same time.

Go to Microsoft Store, either via the Console or a PC and select manage or install. You should see that there and if not, let us know. The game needs to be updated and to do that you need to force a reinstall.
