    Xbox One S External Harddrive Power Surging


    Hi, my 2tb external harddrive for my xbox one s turns off xbox off whenever plugged in. Seems to be surging power from my xbox. When plugged in before xbox is turned on, my xbox doesnt get to the dashboard before turning off. When i plug the harddrive
    in after the xbox is powered on, it just turns the xbox off. My harddrive had been malfunctioning prior to this, it would turn on and off randomly when plugged in. Just trying to get more info on this before i go out and spend another $100.00 on something
    that will have the same issue in the future.

    Original Xbox One unusual power on behavior

    If it powers on without a problem with just the external harddrive unplugged it could be that there is a problem with the power supply. You can try using a different power cable or different surge protector to see if that fixes your problem.

    The Xbox One S has a built in surge protector so you do need an separate one.

    Which Xbox One Console do you have? Xbox One original (external power brick), Xbox One S, or Xbox One X? It might be a power supply failure if you've had any recent power surges or outages without your console being plugged into a surge protector. If you
    have the Xbox One original, then buying a new power supply brick may solve your problem.

    Hi QuickMythril & NightstepShadow both the Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles have built in surge protectors that is why it is recommended you plug it directly into a wall outlet. Please see the link below that confirms this.

    Surge protector with the Xbox Series X

    I've never had any problems with my Xbox One X while it's plugged into an external surge protector and I got my Xbox Series X on release day and it's plugged into an external surge protector as well and I've had no problems with that either.

    I would rather an external surge protector die doing its job than the surge protector dying in the console as you'd have no working console when there was a power surge without an external surge protector as the first line of defence.
