Xbox one s does not allow 60Hz in advanced video settings but my TV supports it

Discus and support Xbox one s does not allow 60Hz in advanced video settings but my TV supports it in XBoX on Consoles to solve the problem; I want to use the Xbox One S as my DVD player, to play 4K Ultra HD HDR blu ray DVDs. I can do that now, however, these DVDs are playing back at 24Hz... Discussion in 'XBoX on Consoles' started by Ramin8or, Oct 24, 2016.

Hmm. How do you know the Blu-Rays are playing in only 24hZ vs 60? Just because the box is checked (which allows native 24hZ content to pass through) doesn't mean that that is what is being used.

As I mentioned yesterday, just because the Xbox One S can do the upscaling, optimal performance will be had by allowing your TV to do the heavy lifting if at all possible. Is there a reason this is not an option for your current setup?

I know blu rays are playing at 24Hz because that's what Xbox One S is telling me in my advanced video settings: 4K, HDR, Allow 24 Hz. It does NOT let me select 60Hz, therefore it is not sending video signal to my TV at 60Hz. Are you saying it doesn't matter
if 24Hz is set, it still sends it at 60Hz? Please clarify.

If I play a standard blu ray DVD, it will be upscaled on my TV screen, because the standard DVD was not recorded at the resolution that my TV provides. But when I play a blu ray DVD recorded at 4K Ultra HD HDR, I don't want upscaling. I want the video signal
at the 4K resolution to be passed to my TV without any compensation or additional processing to upscale. I also want the signal to play at 60 frames per second (60Hz) rather than at 24Hz. When Xbox does not allow me to select 60Hz I have to believe that it
is NOT sending the 4K HDR signal at 60Hz. Could you please tell me how I can report this to the Xbox team? I also work at Microsoft at the Redmond campus, could you please tell me what the process is to report this issue? All I want is the ability to select
4K HDR at 60Hz in advanced video settings.

I really appreciate your help, I am trying to be patient but it's been a long time without any resolution on this.

Yes, this is correct. Checking the 24Hz box simply allows 24Hz content to be supported at that refresh rate but only if/when 24Hz content is supported. See the included image.

If you do not want 24Hz content to be played or supported, unchecking that box should allow everything to play at 60Hz as the

United States does not use 50Hz

Miss Bijoux, I unchecked 24Hz, restarted my Xbox One S, and played a 4K UHD Blu Ray dvd on my Xbox One S. While watching the DVD in the DVD player app, I pressed down on the right stick of my controller. This shows me information such as how many frames
per second is being used. I verified that Xbox One S DVD player is showing 23.98 FPS (frames per second). It is NOT playing back at 60 as you suggested. This is a bug in Xbox One S or the DVD player. Please let me know how I can report this to the Xbox team.
    Thanks!

The FPS you're seeing is not the same as your TV's refresh rate. Frames per second is what the CPU and GPU within the console uses to produce the smooth collection of images. The refresh rate is how fast your display is able to redraw the screen. Some TV's
have a setting that shows what the current refresh rate - is that something that yours has that you can check?

Also, just to clarify (and I realize this may be semantics territory but I want to be sure we're all on the same page) - when you say DVD app, you mean the Blu-Ray app on the Xbox One S, correct? And what movie are you attempting to watch?

As far as filing a bug or passing the information on to the appropriate teams, that's something we can do if we determine that there is a problem but at this point, we don't believe this to be a bug or console deficiency.

Keep us posted. Xbox one s does not allow 60Hz in advanced video settings but my TV supports it :)

Yes by DVD app I mean the Blu-Ray app on the Xbox One S. I am watching several 4K Ultra HD HDR movies like Star Trek Beyond, Point Break, San Andreas, X-Men etc. They are all 4K Ultra HD HDR movies, but the Xbox Blu-Ray app is playing them at only 23.98
FPS. I expect them to be played at 60 FPS. A non 4K regular Blu-Ray movie plays back on the DVD Blu-Ray app at 29.98 FPS. I consider this a deficiency in Xbox One S Blu-Ray player. It has nothing to do with my TV. My TV is capable of handling 60 FPS but the
Xbox DVD Blu-Ray app is not playing it back fast enough.

    I have two questions:

Could you tell me why I cannot check the 60Hz setting in advanced video settings even though my TV is capable of handling it?

Could you tell me why the Xbox One S Blu-Ray app is playing back 4k movies at 23.98 FPS instead of 29.98 or 60 FPS?

    Thanks!

I work in the Film Industry I can help you out with this.

Film is almost always shot in 24 frames per second. This is standard for the industry (with some exceptions). You cannot increase the framerate of a Blu-Ray. You can only play it at the rate in which it was exported.

There are very few films that are above 24 frames per second.

Thank you for your reply Miss Bijoux. I am using HDMI 2 and specifically set it up to support HDR. My Xbox One S does show in 4K TV details that my TV supports 4K 10-bit at 60Hz. However, it does not allow me to select 60Hz. It's stuck at "Allow 24Hz". Please
    see the two screen shots:

    1. from my "Advanced Video Settings" where "Allow 50Hz" is grayed out and there is no "Allow 60Hz".

    2. 4K TV details where it shows my TV support 4K 10-bit at 60Hz.

Here's the folder with the two screen shots: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Aqnl6ezFuZdigeAcQwRp02Dl5dFDzA

Please let me know if you need additional information/

    Thanks!

    Hey -

So the different HDMI ports on the TV sometimes support different things. Can you try a different HDMI port to see if that helps? Each TV's designated HDR port is different so it may be HDMI 1 or HDMI 5. And sometimes it's HDMI 2 because why not. Double
check your manual to be sure you're using the HDMI port that supports HDR and that you're using an HDMI cable that supports it as well (the cable provided with the Xbox One S console is a good choice). If all that is up to snuff and you continue to experience
issues, can you provide us with screenshots of your Advanced Video Settings and your 4k settings please? You can use any image hosting site to host the image and then upload them to your post here.

    Keep us posted! :)

Thanks for following up. So, everything I can see seems to indicate that you are correct and that your TV
should be able to accommodate the settings. Couple other things that come to mind are:

*Making sure that your TV's firmware is totally updated

*Trying HDMI ports 1 and 5

*Making sure that your HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color is set to "On"

If none of that works, can you provide us with EVERY video setting on your TV and what you currently have it set to so we can comb through and see if we can figure out what's going on?

Thank you for your patience, it's much appreciated. :)

Yes I followed all the steps, but nothing works. I'm stuck at 24Hz and Xbox One S does not "Allow 60Hz" even though it says my 4K HDR TV is capable of replaying at 60Hz. Is there a bug already on this issue? If not how can I log a bug so it gets fixed in
    the future? Thanks!

Thanks for that info, . Have you already taken a look at the >>4K and HDR troubleshooting guide<<
yet? If not, please take a peek at that and follow all the steps provided and see if that helps at all. :)
